To me McDavid is domnating by pure talent (speed & skill). In terms of overall talent, using his teamates and on ice intelligence, I think quite a few players in the league are better including his teammate Draisaitl.

Gretzky thought the game 5 steps ahead of everyone else.  By the time he got into the offensive zone he already knew what to do.  In contrast, McDavid basically flies in with his speed and tries to figure it out later.  Two completely different players. McDavid’s passes are also picked off quite a bit. Gretzky’s passes were right on the money every time.  

 

Without that speed McDavid is not even a top 10 player in the league.  I would say once he loses a step he will regress substantially…
