This feels very much like many of the other GMMG signings. Pretty fair for both sides, reasonable. You could call it a small discount, but it is also to avoid a pile of uncertainty, moving, and new situation that might not pan out during or after free agency, not to mention the stress. This goes to show players are at least happy enough to stay here. Fewer (quality) players are leaving to FA lately. This is a fair and reasonable signing for both sides the way I see it

I wonder what happened to all those people that wanted to trade Edler? Said something about Edler probably "leaving for Detriot".

Great deal. Clearly took less to stay. I love the mentatility our players have. We're very lucky to have these guys constantly re-signing at less than market value.

Full marks to MG for creating the type of culture that players take millions $ less to play for the Canucks.

Not quite entire prime. Dmen don't hit their prime until 28 year and stay there well into 30's. He will be in his prime from 28 to 35. Lidstrom didn't win his 1st of 7 Norris trophies until 31. That's when Edler's 6 year deal will expire.

What a great signing...top 4 of back end is firmly entrenched.

Gotta love how MG uses social media to get the story out directly to the fans and bypasses the minions like Botchford, Gallagher, Pap, McIntyre, etc. to reach the fans.

5 Million is an absolute steal but people will complain about this deal later on, similar to how people have hated Luongo's contract if he slows down after a couple of seasons. 6 years is a great time-frame though considering he'll probably hit his prime next season or the year after that.

As for the Cap, WTF is Gillis gonna do now? Last time I checked we were about 2 or 3 million just under the cap, now with Edler's extra dollars we'll be right up against it with no room to sign an essential center.

I love how Gillis has invested so much of our cap in defence, our top-4 is now solidified for the next few seasons and defence does win championships, but we are quite imbalanced now and lacking centers badly. Not sure what's more important to win a Cup - a good defence or depth at center.

No worries. Luongo and (most likely) Ballard will be gone next year and that alone will put us under the cap. Also take into consideration that Raymond and Booth might also be out the door and there is $6+ million more freed up. Lastly, Malhotra will have to take a pay cut if he wants to stay and means another possible $1+ million towards the cap.

Trust me. I've looked at it many times.

Looks pretty likely that this is Ballard's final 1/2 season with the club.
At least he'll leave with a cup ring :bigblush:

Since the Loungo deal MG has been signing players to deals that expire when they are around 34 yrs old. Very smart. The player can be re-signed at that point to a deal that disappears if they retire as opposed to deals signed when the player is 35+ and being stuck with the cap hit if they retire. He's locking guys up for their prime.

With this signing I suspect Ballards days here are numbered. At the end of last season I viewed Ballard as a backup plan if Edler couldn't be re-signed. With this deal his cap hit is simply too high for a bottom pair d-man. I expect him to be moved, if not this season, before the start of next season. Lou's cap hit will also be coming off the books and the new backup will be considerably cheaper.

I'm not too concerned about center at this point. We have options already. We're not going to acquire a second line calibre centre to replace Kelser for half a season. What do you do with him when Kesler returns? What about his cap hit when Kesler comes off LTI? I'll be shocked if this team doesn't make the playoffs as it is. As long as Kesler is back for the last 15 to 20 games he'll be primed for the playoffs and a third line of Higgins/Lappy/Hansen looks pretty good to me.

GMMG likes to be the first to break the news. Love how he did this, this time. Maybe had to do with the frustration of the media from earlier interview? Either way, I still like it

Mike Gillis@GMMikeGillis

I'd like to congratulate Alex Edler on agreeing to terms on a new multi-year deal. Details to follow.

and then this lol..... insiders out of work? #confirmed

He doesn't have to be born in Vancouver for Vancouver to be his hometown. He lives here and makes a living here, that makes it his home town.

Any one who has move away from their place of birth can tell you this.

I am not giddy like most on this signing because at his best he can be a beast (as much as a soft euro can be) or he can be horrible like he was against LA and at other times so far.

Time will tell whether this dea is good or bad for the organization.

I am not sold either way.

If PK is salivating at this deal, he's one contract ahead of himself. Go look at Edler's current 4-year/$13m deal, the age he was at when he signed it, what he's accomplished during that time and compare it to PK's career so far.

Kassian.... Taylor Pyatt 3.0

Lies. He's more of a Steve Bernier. Hopefully his talent level goes up so he can become like a Taylor Pyatt.
