What does x-mas mean to you?

First of all, from our home to you and yours, a very Merry Christmas.

For my wife and I, in the midst of the busy-ness of the season where we're running around wrapping and exchanging gifts, catching up with friends and family, traveling, arguing about ham vs. turkey -- mashed yams vs. mashed potatoes -- pumpkin pie vs. pecan pie -- ugly sweater vs. something stylish -- as Christians, this is a time that we pause and give thanks for the bounty of blessings we have received, and for the gift of Jesus, who came at this time of the year (yup, that's what us whacky Christians believe).

One thing for sure, my wife and I are grateful that at this time of the year, we can, from the comforts our a warm home be lounging on our sofa as I type this message...if I may ask one thing of our Canucks community this Christmas season, it is to pause for a moment and pray for the well being of all the displaced people in the world because of war, famine, water crisis, etc...and also for those under-resourced and at risk persons in our own communities who are spending Christmas out on the streets or in a shelter somewhere.

We hope that Christmas is a time of the year you find love, hope and peace (and by some divine intervention, if the Canucks go on a 25 game winning streak, I'm sure all of us will rejoice).

Knowing full well that not everyone shares the beliefs my wife and I hold, what does Christmas mean to you?

Peace on earth and good will to all men (and women).

To me Christmas means seeing all the people I lose touch with throughout the year.  It means being social, eating too much, drinking too much and generally wallowing in the intemperance of seasonal festivities.  I also like the commercialism aspect, as long as it's within your means.  I bought my wife a sweet Harry Potter colouring book this year, she's going to freak out.

when i was in boot camp for the navy, i met a couple of guys who i became great friends with....one from winnipeg and one from vancouver...the fellow from vancouver was an orphan who ran away from there at age 13....he did whatever he needed to do to survive...at christmas in 1957, we were invited to the winnipeg fellow's sister's home in halifax....i bought a carton of cigarettes and gave them to swifty on xmas day....he cried and said, it was the first present he had ever gotten....we all had tears in our eyes....christmas is for treating others, the way, you'ld want to be treated ....which should extend for 365 days a year...that's what my faith tells me...

Yet you entitled this - What does x-mas mean to you? ... strange.  Trying to be too PC.

Sadly, not much.  Haven't celebrated Christmas since my mom passed away.  I get invites for dinners but I usually decline. Until I get a family of my own I don't see that changing anytime soon.  I enjoy the time off but it gets lonely after awhile.

It means a pile of more spending and debt-collecting, going shopping, which i detest, doing some annoying chores, going to various christmas-related events and parades which may suck or be freezing, and spending some time with people who may not necessarily be all that likable.

But it also means relaxing, spending time with my friends and loved ones, indulging in some good food and drink, playing with some toys, and having a good time in general.

I have no time for jesus in this scenario.  Most i've ever done was go watch and sing along with a church christmas choir once, and that was alright.  I would like christmas to be less commercialized and forced spending for sure.  Too much waste.

While I can't agree with you on the whole Jesus dealeo, I very much agree with the commercialization of Christmas. It's to the point now where I get irritated every year by how commercialized and gift-oriented the 1st-world nations have become. Frankly, I'm just happy to have some time off work and school.

Believe it or not, I didn't even think of what you're saying...just a short title is probably what I was going for.  Merry Christmas...to you and yours.

In a word: Family.

Yes, like most people we spend a lot at this time of year and we overindulge in things that aren't particular good for us, but nothing beats having the family together.

I have three daughters, two of whom have moved out on their own. My oldest flew up from Vancouver last week and stayed a few days, before sailing off to Haida Gwaii to visit with the other side of her family.

I just returned from Prince George yesterday, where I picked up my other daughter and spent a couple days with my parents, who are 92 and 82 and don't get to see their youngest son often enough.

Christmas day will be spent with my wife and two younger daughters and honestly, I could care less what I get. I've already gotten my present.
