Goat James
I really feel that you are undervaluing just how dominant Karlsson is. Sure he doesn't play PK, but that's mainly because he's needed in other situations. He already plays 28-31 minutes a night, so it wouldn't make sense to have him play PK on top of that. Move also drives the play in a crazy matter. The Sens have like a 60 % corsi when he's on the ice and a 45 % when he isn't. Those are some insane numbers. I don't know how far back you have to go to find a defenseman who's this dominant offensively (maybe Orr?) that he's up there near the league lead in scoring, but it's insane. He may not be the best defensive defenseman, but given just how dominant he is in the offensive zone I really feel that you have to lable him best overall. DownUndaCanuck
Karlsson by a long shot. Say what you want about being more "offensive" than some of the other guys and not as good defensively, he doesn't play as physical a game as say even Doughty or Weber but his skating and stick-work is just as good as theirs. Also don't forget who's backing up those other guys. Doughty plays for a defence-first system with Quick as goalie. Weber has Josi as a partner and Rinne as the goalie. Who does Karlsson have to help him defensively or in net? Ottawa are a terrible team and Karlsson should be considered an MVP this season for what he's done. A 15 point drop between Karlsson and the next defenceman is unbelievable. Yes, Karlsson isn't as strong defensively as say Doughty but he MORE than makes up for that with his offence which you can't just ignore, because it's a huge part of the game, and IMO the amount of offence he puts up easily puts him ahead of Doughty who is maybe ever so slightly stronger defensively, in particular physically. Karlsson's also playing almost a minute more than Doughty per game. That's another majorly underrated facet of the game - usually when defencemen play more they make more mistakes but Karlsson can be pushed to almost 29 minutes a game. He leads the league in just about every stat and deserves the Norris hands-down. Karlsson for Norris and probably MVP runner up to Pat Kane. CaNuCkSLoUiE23
If the Canucks are taking a run at the cup, I'm taking Keith. However, I'd rather have Doughty; younger, right-handed, and the perfect age for our young core.

When considering how much a player effects all aspects of the game, it's hard to put anyone over Karlsson. One game earlier this year when one or two of the Sens D went down he ended up playing 36 minutes!! That's unheard of. And regardless of whether his defense isn't as good as Weber or Doughty, his possession game is a step above and it's hard to get scored on when you control the puck. Assisting on almost 1/3 of your teams goals ain't bad either.

I know last year he was the clear Norris favourite before he got injured. This year he's had a slow start but beginning to pick it up recently. GB5
Good question op. I never liked the fact that the Norris trophy usually is a points based award. There are a lot of d-men that may actually help their teams out a lot more than the "fourth" forwards and power play specialists that usually win this thing. For this reason, I'd look no further than Shea Weber for the answer.
