  1. can anyone explain the strategy behind large signing bonuses and small base salaries; and the contracts that pay higher amounts one year, smaller the second year than back up the third year and so on? they must be structured that way for a reason.

      along with the potential lockout year, RFAs are also trying to get the last year of salary as high as possible so their qualifying offers are really high. E.g., Timo Meier's new deal with SJS has 700k base salary in year 1 and 10,000,000 in year 4, so his qualifying offer to keep him in 4 years is 10 million bucks. Boeser's agent is likely trying for something similar.

      Pretty sure it has to do with escrow. I am not 100% sure but I am fairly certain that bonuses don't get charged the escrow % which was around 15% last I saw. That is a lot of money to forfeit over.

      Signing bonuses also can't be bought out, which is why Loui's contract is so bad. So older players would lean toward bonuses for that reason.
