The Checkers have made a significant addition at center, signing NHL veteran Manny Malhotra to a 25-game professional tryout contract.

A two-way forward and faceoff specialist, Malhotra, 33, has played 864 NHL games, most recently with the Vancouver Canucks. During that time, he posted 278 points (108g, 170a) and 421 penalty minutes. The New York Rangers’ first-round pick (seventh overall) in 1998, he has also played for Dallas, Columbus and San Jose.

After suffering a significant eye injury during the 2010-11 season, Malhotra played the first part of the most recent NHL season before going on injured reserve in February.

Good for Manny, glad someone is giving him a try

good for malhotra. kinda bummed he didn't want an office job with us though.

After he said he could play and Gillis said he couldn't, could you really see the two working together in a management capacity?

I'm glad to see someone is giving him a shot. I hope he proves Gillis was wrong.

Gillis wasn't satisfying with burning that bridge, he put mines in the water so it couldn't be rebuilt. Hope Manny manages to play in the NHL again; he clearly loves to play the game.

Good for him, all the best Manny. I don't go to many canucks games, once a year if I am lucky, but I was at this fateful game vs. Avs. At the time none of us in the stands thought it was that serious of a injury.

Thats a lengthy pto. 25 games is a third of the season. I have to think Manny lost some bargaining power.

My guess is that gives him an out in case the NHL comes calling. It's just a PTO so he can accept other offers, but it's 25 games long so they don't have to re-do the contract every few weeks.

Not good. I truly believe no other NHL team wanted him because once they saw his medical file they realized Gillis was right, that he's just not safe on the ice. I feel so bad for him because he's such a great guy and obviously a hard worker and still a good player. But he has to have a life after hockey and he's jeopardizing that unnecessarily by playing when he can't adequately protect himself.

Still, I wish him nothing but the best. Stay safe, Manny!
