probably stuck watching hamhuis higgins and weber for the rest of my life

Hey I've been an advocate for trading Hamhuis and Higgins. The team has surpassed them. With Hamhuis, it is not a matter of if but when he gets injured; I thought he was done against Dallas. With Higgins, "you know what you're gonna get"; a serviceable and consistent defensive specialist with an extremely inconsistent scoring spurt, followed by a dry spell that rivals the Sahara; every year he works his way up to the second line and instantly dries up.

Weber is a very good, cheap 6-7D who can be perfectly relied upon at that position but degrades fast in efficiency if counted up as a 4D and above.

For me, it's time to trade Higgins and Vrbata at the trade deadline for sure, and either package Hamhuis now for good returns, possibly a young defenseman, or gamble that Hamhuis won't get injured between now and the trade deadline and get a hefty return based on the Olympian's pedigree alone.

I don't know what you see in Dorsett. He passed to the other team on a break away yesterday, never hits anymore, and fights absolutely everybody that asks him with no consideration what effect it will have on the game. Young guy needs to make a name, tap Dorse on the shoulder- fight, old guy needs to show he'll still go, tap Dorse on the shoulder- fight, Canucks score 2 quick goals, other team need momentum shift, tap Dorse on the shoulder- fight.  He is an angry little man too willing to show HE is tough enough.

I'd keep Cracker and Prust over Dorsett any day.

The opposite can be said for Sven, no grit, never wins a puck battle, shoots muffins.

I might keep Dorsett over Sven.

Trade as many Higgins,Burrows,Vrbata,Edler,Hamhuis,Weber as possible.

I'd keep Prust over Higgins, Sven and Dorsett and sign Lucic.

Prust and Lucic please Benning.

Assuming Tanev gets around 2.5 mil, Kassian gets 1.5, and Hansen is on his way out (Dorsett makes him expendable IMO), we have roughly 14 million to spend on two roster spots.

We obviously have holes in our top 6 and on D, so what is the best way to spend this money? Does Benning sign a goalie?

What are some options people like? Statsny? Bolland? Boyle? Niskanen? Iginla? Richards?

I'm hoping next years team looks like this

Sedin-Sedin-Boeser

Lucic-R.Johansen-Virtanen

Shinkaruk-McCann-Hansen

Gaunce-Horvat-Grenier

Prust,Cracknell

Edler-Buff

Hutton-Tanev

Tryamkin-Pedan

Tinordi-Subban

Markstrom

Demko

That's some very wishful thinking.  What a team we would have if we could get all those guys though.

I honestly don't get the love affair over getting Lucic. On a good team, he's a second liner. Yay he's physical and a local boy. He's going to easily command more than $7 mil on the open market and likely get a gigantic amount of term on that contract. If he WERE to sign in Vancouver, that contract will be so regrettable. Especially when Virtanen gets as good as he's going to. How good would Raffi Torres be if he hit clean and had more offensive upside? It would make him one of the most coveted forwards in the NHL. THAT is what we have in Virtanen. Do we really want a guy like Lucic teaching Virtanen how to play hockey the right way?! Excuse me while I throw up in my mouth. The way he carries himself is not how we want Virtanen to be.

It all depends on what the contract is. 7 mill seems like a huge stretch for Lucic, even a desperate team wouldn't be that crazy.

I agree with you that Lucic would be a terrible mentor for Virtanen. :P Prust has taken Virtanen under his wing, and I think he's done great with the young rookie.

I fully agree with you. Problem is, he is already making 6 and is in his prime now. I can honestly see him getting 7 for 7 years and it makes me shudder. Lucic is good, but there hass to be someone better out there who could help Virtanen along. Anyone up for acquiring Iginla?! I still have been dying to see him play with the Sedins.

That OP ended up being so far away from our actual roster - six forwards, four D and a goalie out of 23. In hindsight, the roster we have is significantly better than the OP's suggestion - that to me shows GMJB is doing a good job.

If Lucic was that great he'd still be playing in Boston.

What about Boychuk? Campbell? Thomas? Seguin?

What about them? Players get released for all kinds of reasons, Boychuk was expensive, Thomas was old, Seguin was partying. But Lucic is supposedly in his prime.
