[Signing] Kane and Toews confirmed to sign $10.5 million contracts

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately teams will keep handing out huge contracts then run crying to Bettman afterward screaming for a lockout and "finanical structure." I don't think it is all doom and gloom for the Blackhawks. Pittsburgh with their two huge contracts have been competitive, not a cup team, but competitive. If the cap continues to rise Chicago could still be a threat.

yes the Penguins have remained competitive making the playoffs every year winning a couple rounds but they aren't a threat in the east the only reason people consider them a cup favorite year after year is because of Crosby and Malkin but it takes more than 2 players to win cups

Blackhawks are walking the same path if they do indeed sign Kane and Toews to 10-11 million a year contracts there is no predicting where the cap will be you can't assume it will reach 100 plus million just because of past trend it could easily stabilize at stay around 70-80 nobody knows what it will do

they will continue to make the playoffs win a couple rounds probably reach the Conf final but just like the Penguins they won't be considered a threat because the depth won't be there anymore

They got 2 cups, we have none. Pride and stupidity go hand in hand with a Canucks fan,

So? We beat them last series we played and would have swept if the refs hadn't fixed the games.

The year they won the cup we beat them good in the regular season. They aren't that great. Especially not when they played against canucks with luongo in net.

Chicago is a pathetic city. Give me one list that ranks Chicago better than Vancouver. Vancouver is better. Rather die than say anything good about Chicago.

Chicago has 2 cups end of story they are a far better team than Vancouver regular season doesn't mean anything playoffs is where it counts

With the cap going up and set to continue to do so, this is what two of the top 10 players in the world cost. Especially if they have given you 2 Stanley Cups by the time they even begin to enter their prime.

Ovie, Malkin and Crosby got monster deals in the years before. Kane & Toews are younger, and more accomplished.

As it stands the deal would cost Chicago 8 million (more than they are already paying). But not for another season. The cap already rose and by the time this deal is in effect, that 8 mill might be totally covered by inflation.

Having said that I find 10 to be a lot more likely than 10.8

I would have dealt Kane and cashed in on his over-rated, one dimensional game long before showing him that kind of insane cap hit and term. Could have gotten a Kesselian+ kings ransom for him - now they're hamstrung imo.

Would absolutely hate this deal if I were a Hawks fan....but being a Canucks fan....love it - absolutely love it.

Common sense is knowing Chicago is done if they give 31% of their cap to two players.

it won't be 31% since the cap won't be $69 m next year.

if toews and kane sign for $10.8 m each and no other changes are made, the hawks will have 10 forwards, 3 defencemen, and 2 goalies under contract for about $66.4 m with kruger, saad, leddy and rundblad as rfas.

they'll be fine.

It actually is $69 million...

They're done, and will take 2-3 years to become irrelevant again.

they're under contract for 2014-15. the extensions would kick in for 2015-16, when the cap could easily be $75 m.

offload bickell and versteeg and that's another $6.2 m off the books.

Which would only give them $3.9 million in cap space since they're already $2 million over right now. Along with Toews and Kane they have to re-sign Saad, Leddy, Oduya, Kruger, Roszival, and Rundblad. That means they say good bye to Sharp and Hossa if not this year then next year.

for 2015-16, they currently have $44.8 m committed towards the cap. if they lose bickell and versteeg, that number drops to $38.6 m. add the $21.6 m for toews and kane and you're at $60.2 m. bring up garrett ross and ryan hartman to replace bickell and versteeg respectively for a total of $1.5 m and you're at $61.7 m. give leddy a modest raise to $3.25 m, rundblad to $1 m, kruger to $2 m, saad to $3.25 m on a bridge deal. $71.2 m. let oduya and rozsival walk and replace them with clendening and another rookie or journeyman ($1.5 m total). $72.7 m. let brad richards walk and bring up mark mcneil ($863 k). $73.6 m. bring back peter regin at $700 k. $74.3 m.

that's a 23 man roster without losing any core pieces that fits under a $75 m cap for 2015-16.
