[Report] Todd McLellan to coach Oilers

Recommended Posts

Todd McLellan will be the next Edmonton Oilers head coach.

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Monday that while the deal is not done and there are still details being worked out, McLellan is expected to join the Oilers.

McLellan who had served as San Jose head coach since 2008-09 left the Sharks by mutual agreement on Apr. 20.

He immediately went to the Czech Republic to serve as head coach for the Canadian team at the 2015 IIHF World Championship, helping lead the nation to its first gold medal at the competition since 2007.

McLellan had been the Sharks’ head coach since 2008-09, taking the reins from Ron Wilson.

He guided the team to first in the Pacific Division in each of his first three seasons as head coach, twice reaching the Western Conference Final. In 540 games as Sharks’ coach, McLellan posted a 311-163-66 record.

The expected addition of McLellan continues what has already been a busy off-season for the Oilers.

Bob Nicholson was named the Oilers’ new CEO on Apr. 20, giving him expanded responsibilities over his previous role as Vice Chair.

The team won the 2015 NHL Draft Lottery on Apr. 18, moving up from the third selection to first overall. The team is widely expected to select Erie Otters phenom Conor McDavid with its first pick on June 26.

The Oilers also named former Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli as the team’s new GM and President of Hockey Operations. His hiring likely means a minimized role for former executives Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish, both of whom remain within the organization.

Oilers forwards Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle were both prominent members of McLellan’s World Championship roster.

Shocker. Totally out of left field. Never saw this coming.

Can't blame him.

Does this mean Babcock is going to take Leaf money?

Actually it's believed that Babcock has already crossed the Leafs off of his list. I think all of this Babcock chasing is a bit much. He's a good coach, but he's not exactly Scotty Bowman (who lives here in Buffalo btw).

Really, the Oil have been after Mclellan for weeks now, at least according to the Edmonton media. The team has finally made a number of smart moves over the past few months that may pay off in the relative short term. In some respects it reminds me of the changes in Vancouver one year ago.

The Oilers are still in need of a quality goaltender and defensemen. They expect to be a better team next season and much more competitive in the western conference.

I just lost some respect for Scotty Bowman.

This is the dumbest misconception people say. It has absolutely 0 value. You know why? Because Babcock is getting a max coaching contract regardless of where he signs. Whether it be Detroit, San Jose, Buffalo, etc, he's getting his cheque no matter what.

And btw, TO won't be getting Babcock, not a chance.

But I thought the Leafs just had more money than any other team? This is what I hear all the time about that team. So can they not just buy Babcock?

They also need a captain who isn't a locker room cancer. They have no chance of making the playoffs with a piece of trash like Ferrence in a leadership role.

Oilers are gonna be better. Calgarys gonna be better, SJ gonna be worse, Canucks gonna be worse La will be better and so will anahiem. arizona could be either one I don't know.

I don't think we are gonna make playoffs next year because of how things are probably gonna look next year but I just really hope this team can try to get as many draft picks and young players as we can start to tear apart this old core who can't get it done.
