Well he hasn't really dominated the OHL yet other than in the playoffs. I don't think being on the first line and having a 90+ point season would hurt him too much.

He's still gotta work on keeping his feet moving, and being more consistent offensively.

There's lots of good things waiting for him in junior if he can't cut it. Including being captain of the Bulls, hopefully making team Canada, and having another good shot at making the Memorial Cup.

Yeah, I agree. He hasn't had that first NHL camp experience and then return to junior with the knowledge of what it takes to make the NHL like a lot of guys get, so even though he is a year older he is kind of in the same spot as Horvat and Shinkaruk.

He has had an awesome camp though, but I worry about a tail off in play. I have higher hopes for Shinkaruk playing this season than anyone.

Dangler, what's your scouting report on tonights game?

Jokes aside, he looked great tonight. He definitely needs a bit more acceleration but his top speed is good. Good job on the forecheck, very stellar passing, and nice job on the goal. I think he was the most convincing by a mile of any forward prospects tonight. Shinkaruk also displayed a lot of his offensive creativity and looked good too.

so...in the spirit of being a true cdc'er...gaunce is a goal per game guy so far, highest scorer on the team! in half-seriousness, and because of where he's scored his goals from, why not give him a pre-season cup of coffee with the Sedins?!

I know, they're working on the kassian experiment, hoping it will be ready for the start of the season. but could you imagine all the stars aligning and kassian gelling with kesler burrows and gaunce shovelling in Sedin rebounds?!

dare to dream...

While gaunce has the IQ to play wth the twins, the most important element that kass brings is an edge.........as much as I like gaunce, his presence isn't going to to deter anyone from jabbing at the twins. Kass scares guys out there because he's big, tough and batsh!t crazy, or at least gives off that vibe. Opposing players aren't sure whats coming at them when he gets in the mix.

Kass has no idea what the Sedins are doing, which is kind of an issue. Anyways, on topic Gaunce is pretty much what I hoped he'd be, except he's probably slower than Hal Gill. He seems quite weak to me, you really see it when he tries to play the body so i'm wondering if that's the issue with his skating. The question is, when everything else is NHL ready is the best place to get stronger in junior or the NHL?

Here's Gaunce's write up from the Hockey Prospectus review of our prospect pool:

5. Brendan Gaunce, Center

2011-12 Ranking: 2nd

Date of birth: 03/25/1994

Age: 19

Height: 6'2''

Weight: 215

Shoots: Left

Statistics: 60 GP, 33 G, 60 P (Belleville, OHL)

Acquired: First round, 26th overall in 2012 by Vancouver

Year in Review: Gaunce had a solid season; he was one Belleville's best forwards at both ends of the ice.

The Good: Gaunce is a big, strong forward who plays a pretty impressive power game. He hits well, wins battles, and attacks the high percentage areas. Gaunce works hard at both ends, displaying impressive defensive IQ. He has a solid skill level with good hands in tight. Gaunce also displays above-average vision and offensive instincts.

The Bad: Gaunce's skating still is not the best. His top speed is average, but he is not a blazer or a very elusive player. Exactly how high his offensive upside can go is also a minor question mark on his game.

Projection: He could be an above-average regular, although it is unclear if he will do so as a checker or scorer.

Honestly I didn't think much of Gaunce after watching the young stars tourney and a few scrimmages, but he's gotten better every game.

Despite his lack of speed(great positioning makes up forr it), he can probably come in straight to the nhl this season and be just as effective as a 3rd/4th line defensive specialist like Campbell. But then again, he can amount to much more than that by playing bigger minutes and developing in juniors.

Santorelli > Gaunce

Richardson>Gaunce

End of story.

They definitely are better candidates if your referring to the 3rd line center vacancy, but you aren't acknowledging how great he has been, and how you judged him a bit too early in that prospects tournament. Are you really going to say he has not been solid defensively and looked good out there all of the preseason games he has played?

Also, Gaunce, Santorelli and Richardson are all capable of playing all three forward positions. Management wants more youth on this team, and Gaunce has been the best out of the youth, and is the most NHL ready. Don't you agree?

Gaunce deserves a spot on this team, hopefully he can play wing because he's much better than pylons like Weise and Sestito.

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian

Burrows - Kesler - Booth

Hansen - Richardson - Higgins

Gaunce - Santorelli - Shinkaruk/Ferriero/Weise

Guance doesn't have Weise's speed nor Sestito's physicality but has real solid positional play. Really disappointed in Sestito's play last night. He turned the puck a lot and looked real slow. There is no point keeping Guance in Van if he plays less than 10 minutes a game. Even with PK minutes I don't see that happening. Of the young players he looks most ready to me.

Who is their right mind would put Shinkaruk on the 4th line?
