I don't see a lot of buzz on the board about Aston-Reese and I'd like to see this kid sign with Vancouver. so, here we go.

The Caggiula wine&dine thing didn't work last year. As a result, Drake signed in Edmonton.

I hope TL and JB has figured something out better than just taking the guy out to dinner. Has anyone heard anything?

I'd be careful what we offer this kid,  he really only had 1 stellar season as a senior playing with some gifted linemates within a team system that stresses offense at the sake of defence.  It's like a 20yo overager dominating in the CHL - not as impressive as it first sounds.

Not saying he isn't talented, just be careful.

By the rules, it has to be an ELC. Money-wise there's not much to worry about. Am I wrong?

I believe ELC criteria do exist,  what i was meaning is that sometimes when multiple teams show interest agents will look for other guarantees.   Supposedly that's why Schultz went to EDM,  they guaranteed him a roster spot with the NHL club. But then again Stecher signed here knowing he'd be in Utica - but he's a slightly different situation being local kid.

At this point, I don't think roster spots are a huge problem?

It's not the spot i would have an issue with - it's the idea of 'gifting' said spot.

If ZAR wants to sign here and earn his spot through ECHL/AHL/whatever other way then great -welcome aboard.   But if he wants/expects something other than that....

That's all I meant.

Get him an escort... its what my sales director did to help secure a massive 1000 bus/400 million dollar bid from New York City.

Half joking...

It was only 500 buses or 200 mill?

For the end of this season maybe as it's an incentive to sign but not for next.  Willes spoke to Linden and it sounds like players will be developing in Utica - even Boeser is expected to spend a year there (unless he surprises).   I think they've learned their lesson with Virtanen and McCann - in Utica there's more training and playing time available to develop.

I'd take a gamble. We're hardly losing anything if he doesn't pan out.

And no It's not really a 20 yr old kid dominating CHL thing. Reese plays against mainly 20-25 year olds, not 16-19 year olds.

If we give this kid a spot based on anything but him earning it then yes, it costs us.  Perhaps not monetarily,  but it's bad optics both inside and outside of the organization imo.

It's essentially the exact same thing in my view.   Reese was a senior this year playing against competition with less experience - perhaps not as extreme an analogy as a 20yo in the CHL because of how men mature physically in life,  but a relevant example nevertheless.

You should check out the prospects board because it's been buzzing for a while on ZAR.

But now that there are reports the Canucks are genuinely "in the mix" for Aston-Reese, Canucks Talk should start heating up.

He's a guy I've had on my list for a few years now. Obviously, I'm hoping this is the year.

There are gonna be a lot of teams competing for Aston-Reese. Hopefully we can come out on top. A lot will depend on what kind of opportunity he's looking for. If it's a chance to "win now," then obviously we're not an option. But if he wants to be part of a rebuilding team, and have a chance to "play now" and grow with a a good mix of young players, then we should be on his short list. And I'd assume Benning will pull out all the stops as for as ELC maximums and offering a 2016-17 effective contract (to burn a year and also get signing bonus money in his pocket ASAP).

I don't think wanting to play now is a real selling point for Vancouver for any young player at this point though. Agents pay attention to the opportunity being given to young players.

A team will likely offer him the same money that has a far better track record/coaching that will be willing to put those players in more than a half time 4th line half time press box or AHL situation.

I really dont think the Canucks have much of a realistic shot at this kid to be honest. I hope I am pleasantly surprised but I just don't see it.
