There's some truth to this. Petronas pulled out because of two things: The difficulty in getting environmental approval and current low price for LNG.

I have a friend who used to work for one of the LNG companies, (I can't keep them all straight anymore) but now works for the DP World. His words were a bit more harsh. Something to the effect of "They don't want an LNG plant in BC". The gist being that the government makes the approval process so onerous and expensive, that it eventually drives the companies away.

Still, I believe that the global price was the real killer. As Strome and a couple of others have pointed out, the US and Australia have made hay while we dragged our feet and we're now playing catch up. Unfortunately, companies are not going to invest billions unless there is a promise of some profit down the road. With the current glut of LNG on the market right now, there's no money to be made in starting up a new enterprise, at least, not at this stage.

This is why Horgan's announcement has to be taken with a grain of salt. Certainly, it's a good gesture, but he also has to know that there isn't a lot of interest out there for taking him up on the offer at this point.

The good news is, Northern BC has one thing that no-one else can offer: A naturally deep harbour, that's about a day closer to Asian markets than any other North American port. If and when the prices come back up again, we should be well positioned to take advantage, especially if the government is truly interested in making it happen.

they did feasibility tests with 2 ships the first one off loaded containers in Rupert and were on rail immediately ,it took 48 hr's for the Vancouver ship to arrive .it took a few more days for it to get to a dock , in the 2 days of ship travel to Vancouver the containers offloaded  in Rupert arrived in Saskatoon. meanwhile the containers offloaded in van took almost a week to get to port mann  ,cape horn  being shunted around Vancouver . Rupert port expansion #3 SOON.

The more intelligent posters here... always knew how this story would end....

Time to start investing in Green energy. Our planet depends on it.

Time to open a bottle of champagne and start the  BC celebrations....

Albertans will most likely be having a WHINE and Cheese tonight...

Kinder Morgan to halt its spending on Trans Mountain Pipeline due to B.C. opposition

1) That's not what will happen though. Instead Alberta and Canada will continue to get the lowest amount for it's oil and people like you in B.C will be supporting the Americans controlling our oil.

2) The Americans will certainly be celebrating if this project gets cancelled.

All citizens in Canada and USA should be celebrating now that this project is cancelled.

Time to address Global warming is now.   Time to invest in Green energy is now.

Oh the Americans are celebrating if this project gets cancelled. They will stay in control of our oil, they will continue to pay very little for our oil. People like you are saving the Americans money and hurting the Canadian economy. Well done.-_-

Btw the project isn't cancelled like you said.

Oil is not the result of "global warming." Oil is not strictly energy. This pipeline would be "greener" than the other ways it is being transported. This does not stop the oil from being transported, it stops Canada from benefiting from it appropriately. But you keep hiding under your rock.

It's not dead yet lol. It has been suspended. They're going to try and reach an agreement with stakeholders by the end of May.

I know..... isn't that great news....    There will be thousands of celebration parties tonight all over British Columbia.

Such great news......

First step is suspending construction... next  step will be project cancelation.

The good people of BC have come to the conclusion that putting our harbour at risk  for the support of a dirty source of oil is simply not an acceptable risk.

Well  done BC protestors.   Thank you.

Lets see if Alberta ups the ante and forces gas prices up to $5/L in the LM. Horgan would lose his support right quick.

Or maybe skyrocket the price of A1 jetfuel such that flights from YVR would have a huge surcharge. I'm sure the airport would love that.

They won't have many parties because nobody can afford to go out to any of them. Gas isn't as cheap as it is east of B.C.

Yeah having multiple protestors obstructing a Mountie from arresting a troublemaking protestor then having a protestor push and injure the officer while he was in pursuit is a great way to protest! BC should be proud of hurting the people paid to protect them!

The BC gov is alone in this fight. Just going to get worse and worse for the province. There are no compromises.

JT should grow some balls and just ram it down horgan/corrigan's throat. And no, the indians don't get a say either - we do far too much pandering to them already.

You mean Indians, like from South East Asia?

According to warhippy there was nothing wrong with that

Here's some food for thought.

https://www.transmountain.com/spill-history

With this kind of history how could a new, updated, upto or overchachieving current standards pipeline from this company be worse? Why hasn't BC ordered them to tear down the current one? What is really the fight here?

Looks like everyone is celebrating tonight.  Such GREAT News for our planet....
