Hughes was a minus the first year without Tanev. He’s been a plus since, even while paired with AHL players. Hughes is a phenom. If we kept Tanev (Benning :picard:) Hughes would have had 100 point season. Cole will be the best partner Hughes has had since Tanev. Still he’s a placeholder until Willander is ready. Woo could surprise though, and won that spot beside Quinn.

Willander is another hughes. when ready he will need a defensive defenseman as well.

Like a Schenn, Weber, Phaneuf, Seabrook or whatever... A hard hitting d-zone as a complementary player.

You can tell he's an offensive defenseman because of all of the bagels he's put up in the points column over the last 5 years.

I totally agree with you. My point is, Hughes needs a partner who can lose a few teeth and still challenge anyone who dares come up the ice when hughes is behind the offense blue line.

Love hearing this. He was definitely getting under opponents’ skin in the playoffs. Would love to see him settle into this identity in Vancouver

Well it will be interesting. Vancouver have big decisions as Rathbone and Woo will not clear waivers if sent to AHL...

Teams will pick up these guys especially Woo RD...

there is no telling how this will go. all the fans want are defense that get points.... the real power is in the guy who covers for the defense jumping up. the problem with Myers is he should have been the guy jumping but he had to defend the 2 on 1 on the fails. Everyone bought Myers as an Offensive D but they never gave him a partner who could play behind him....

dont you guys all play playstation NHL or at least xbox?  you all think the offensive defensmen are gonna pair well with each other. It does not work that way boys and girls. And thats based on facts and data and all kinds of stats. Why did Myers fail? always paired with another offensive d. OEL? same.

Hughes?

oh, Bear works?

Schenn works?

Like WTF people put it together. Myers, Hughes, OEL, Heronik, Wolanin, Johansson and D Petey

need the other side,

the Bear, Schenn, Dumba, Juulsen, Woo, Keeper,  Tanev, Smyl, Stecher, JOVOCOP

as a coach, I've had many successful d pairings of offensive dmen with offensive dmen.  If you just try to fill specific roles for combos, rather than on the chemistry between players, then you're not going to be very successful.  If Hughes and Hronek have great chemistry, you'd be stupid not to have them together.

Hughes partner doesn’t have to hire Tanev’s dentist to get the job. That is only an option.

I'm not sure what the point is here

point is, if you were a SUCCESSFUL coach, the canucks would have been a positive defensive team with OEL, Myers, Hughes, Burrooughs playing together.

Please tell us more about your SUCCESSFUL offensive D pairings playing with offensive Dmen. You might get a job in Calgary

I am a f**king angry elf. We wasted 3 years on MYERS trying to make him the backup D-man when he should be going full tilt. A friggin waste, and we all complain that he cant stop the 2 on 1 and all that.... the point is Myers has been on the wrong side of the equation for years. Fans want the defense to score points and these idiot coaches put offensive defense on the same pairing. Yes Im an angry f**king elf

After this upcoming season, the only NHL d-men under contract will be Hughes, Hronek and Soucey (assuming Hronek gets re-signed, but I don't see how we don't given the assets we gave up for him).

Half of the defence core is up for grabs next season. It's up to Woo, Juulsen, Johansson, McWard, Brisebois and Hirose to show that they can take those spots. If at least 3 of these 6 guys pan out and can be NHL regulars - that would be amazing. It would be huge sign of improvement in player development and provide the Canucks a ton of cap flexibility moving forward, especially with the dreaded OEL buyout kicking in and Petey having to be re-signed.

Is it bad for me to hope for an injury or two during the season ? It would be an opportunity to ease some of these guys in and see what they can do.
