Being tough on crime doesn't reduce crime.

Too simplistic.   Tough on petty crime driven by poor choices is a false approach as you point out but being soft on hard-core criminal activity is not working.    Hard-core crime is typically carried out by repetitive offenders and people who have made choices to NOT be part of a civil society.

Stealing a couple of swag bags from an overpaid NBA athlete (try hockey, a real sport) should not lead to anything more than a "thanks for teaching the idiot to lock their car" slap on the wrist.   However, Canada is increasingly showing a trend many countries have fallen into in treating the most serious crimes as somehow not requiring society's strongest condemnation including the ultimate penalty should you choose to end another's innocent life.

Can you show me an example. I'm not up to date of new policies on severe crimes.

Mandatory release laws.   Abolition of capital punishment.   Maximum sentence guidance with reductions across the board.     Pick one of these or many others.

This would never happen in LA or his hometown of North Babylon New York right?  Right??

FFS you can leave valuables in a bag in a care home in Beverly Hills and it'll likely get stolen.

I actually think he thought it was the opposite. That this is Canada, a socialist haven therefore we don't have any problems. At least that's what I took when he said he didn't know that "Canada has stuff going on". Many of these athletes live in a bubble.

Vancouver is Canada’s drug addict haven. They all make the pilgrimage to their Jerusalem. You can crap wherever you want, steal stuff, harass people for money and smokes. People feel sorry for you. It doesn’t get cold. If I ever come off the rails that’s where I’m going.

When it comes to crapping, nothing beats San Francisco, it’s fecal capital of North America.

He wasn't robbed, it was a simple case of theft due to stupidity. Not locking the doors of your G Wagon (just a guess)  while near East Hastings with lots of valuables inside :picard:

Many just walk along the road trying to open every car door until it they find one unlocked.

Heck, once I'm sitting in the car and someone still opened the door.

Honestly, seriously think about it. Being a millionaire would be complete freedom. Second to that would be the freedom to just crap on the sidewalk. If I don’t become a multimillionaire within the next 5 years, I’m seriously considering just making a 180. Pitch a tent, just chill. Crap on the sidewalk. Cause struggling in the middle of those 2 extremes sucks.

Try crapping on sidewalks on the East Coast in Winter when they're covered in a foot of snow....at least out here the rains will wash away your deposits.:P

Lol...reminds me of my University days...On my Finals exam (Philosophy) it consisted of writing an essay based on a lengthy sad story ending with the question 'why?'.  A friend of mine just wrote 'Why not?' and received a grade of 100% on the test!  TRUE STORY!
