[Rumour] Hurricanes interested in Frederik Andersen

Recommended Posts

Quote

The Carolina Hurricanes are interested in Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

However, Toronto won't move its starter unless an upgrade is available, and a strong group of free-agent goaltenders this offseason could factor into its decision, Friedman adds.

It was reported earlier in August that the Leafs are exploring Andersen's trade market - along with those of other players - after they were eliminated by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the qualifying round this summer.

Andersen has been the Leafs' No. 1 netminder since joining the club via trade from the Anaheim Ducks prior to the 2016-17 campaign. He's posted a .916 save percentage and 2.77 goals-against average in 244 appearances in Toronto, though he's coming off his worst season with the club, owning a .909 percentage in 52 games.

The Hurricanes drafted Andersen in 2010, but he never signed and re-entered the draft two years later. The soon-to-be 31-year-old will enter the final year of his contract and carries a $5-million cap hit.

Carolina ran with a tandem of Petr Mrazek and James Reimer in goal this past season, and the duo ranked 26th in the NHL with a combined .912 save percentage at even strength. Both netminders are under contract for the 2020-21 campaign.

Does Toronto have an NHL ready goalie in their system behind Andersen?  I wonder if they're looking at Holtby, Marky, or Lehner.

They don't really have the cap space to get Marky even if they move Anderson. If Marky gets 6 from us, he'll want 7 from them or more. But if they offer 8.... then that could be it.

Man, Anderson must be thrilled.... they put 1/2 an AHL d group in front of him and he's the problem?

Toronto's management is not doing a good job.  They have way too much money locked up in 4 players and the rest of the roster is feeling it.  Andersen is a solid goalie, if you put him behind solid D he'd easily be in the top 10 for goalies.

why would a free agent goalie want to go there after they did this to Andersson? how much money in LTIR is Doobie aim for  he'll need 20 mill  in LTIR trades.

I don't know why any free agent would want to get there.  Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, and Marner are all a blackhole salary wise.  Basically impossible to build a competent team around them with the current cap situation.

canucks should do a deal around demko and one of bean/slavin/skeij/pesce

Good luck with that.  Reimer did well as the backup, and don't they have a guy in the minors?  Meanwhile, Bean's a 1st rounder, Slavin and Pesce were two of the more underrated D, and they got Skjei for a 1st, and he's a part of their top 4, no?

They have 11 NHL defensemen on their roster

There are plenty of proven starters on the market.  Canucks are going to sign a 30 year old Markstrom and are not looking to wait on Demko.   Why would teams whose windows are open now be looking to add an unproven starter?   It would limit their window, and who knows if and how long it will take Demko to establish himself as a starter.  It took Markstrom years.

They could also get a far better return than Demko for one of their Ds, not that they are looking to trade any.   They only have 5 roster Ds under contract next season and Gardiner has not worked out.  It opens a spot for Bean and he is still on an ELC which helps their cap.  Hamilton might also price himself out in a year.

Have to give up a lot more for Slavin or Pesce. Jake Bean had a very good year in the AHL. With all their depth and Bean needing to be protected in the expansion draft he’s my target. Something around Demko for Bean with small parts whichever way to even it out.

Andersen is a proven starter unlike Demko.  They are looking to win now and have Aho for maybe only another 4 years.  If Arizona is indeed rebuilding Craig Morgan wonders if they might be willing to move Kuemper who is a more established goalie.  CBJ could also move Korpisalo as they now have 2 starters and seem to prefer Merzlikins.

NYI protected 5 Ds last expansion, Carolina could do the same.  Aho, Svechnikov, Teraveinen - is there another F worth protecting?

Staal has a NMC. He has to be protected. They could try really hard to move him.

If they do 4f 4d they put Foegele/Bean/Fleury available

If they do 7f/3d they will for sure lose one of their top 4 D (Hamilton/Pesce/Slavin/Skjei) assuming they re-sign Hamilton, which I don't see why they wouldn't.

As it stands they are gonna lose a quality piece. I'd do 4f/4d (Staal/Aho/Svech/Teraveinen/Hamilton/Pesce/Slavin/Skjei) Take the hit losing one of Fluery/Foegele/Bean

I noticed that but they could ask him to waive or buy him out - it would be a 2M cap hit for another 4 years.  Not sure there would be many teams lining up to give him 6M for 2 years.  He might prefer to just waive if the alternative is to be bought out.

They are looking to extend Hamilton and will apparently engage in discussions this off-season per Waddell.

Hamilton Slavin Pesce Skjei Bean Fleury.  If they trade a D they will have 5 left and still could be down to 4 after expansion.  They might prefer to simply stay at 6 Ds and then be down to 5 after expansion.  Keeping their Ds should normally help them have a better season and allows them to have someone to replace the one they'll lose (if Seattle takes a D).  They are going to lose 1 player regardless of what happens.

Some GMs overthought the process and would probably want a do-over.  Fletcher admitted that he should have just accepted to lose a player.
