Well, it is a copycat league so they are trying to emulate Tampa Bay. Lightning top 6 players (Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman, Point, McDonagh and Vasilevskiy) have a combined $49M cap hit.

Seems to me the only difference is Tampa has won a couple of cups and the Oilers have won 1 playoff series in the past 10 years....lol

Difference = 3_GrandCAnyon101_HowWasItFormed_shutters

One more difference, Tampa knows how to use LTIR to maximize their roster... heck, they just acquired Seabrook for that exact reason.

Upcoming rumour:

Ryan Kesler to Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa had to take Seabrook back to lower the cost to move Johnson.   It's a negative.  Teams with LTIR contracts forfeit cap space.

In 2019, Tampa traded Callahan's 5.8M LTIR contract for Mike Condon's 1.3M buried cap hit.  Condon had a 2.4M AAV but never got called up from the AHL/ECHL.  Brisebois explained how they didn't want to be in LTIR because they wanted to be able to bank cap space to retain roster flexibility and avoid bonus overages and that it would give them more cap space at the trade deadline.

So if Tampa did not have all of the LTIR contracts on their books last year, they would have been better off and would have won the Cup?

Brutal. I get decent point producing D men are useful and you need some of them on the team,

But as long as you have a serviceable puck mover you would be better served pumping the money into shut down D who can play 25 minutes a night against top parings.

What exactly do you expect him to say?  "Yeah, we found a loophole so we are exploiting it as best we can."

Kucherov and Seabrook are 2 different situations.  Kucherov did not have a career ending injury unlike Seabrook.

Teams are much better off to avoid LTIR if they can.  They had no choice with Kucherov - they weren't going to trade their best player.

Having Seabrook on their books hurts them like it hurts Vancouver to have Ferland.  The Canucks have lost cap space.  There's an example in the Ferland retirement thread - the Canuck would be better off if they could move out his contract but the cost is likely prohibitive.

Just like Tampa realised that they were better off without Callahan even if it meant having a buried cap hit of over 1.3M on their books.

Instead of moving players that are currently on their roster to get under the $81.5M cap limit which is what SHOULD happen, they traded specifically for LTIR to get under the cap.  If that doesn't scream cap exploitation, then what exactly would YOU call it?  Now they traded for Seabrook who luck has it will be on LTIR for the entire season as well.

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/30609003/tampa-bay-lightning-trade-braydon-coburn-cedric-paquette-cap-compliance

"The Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning found the salary-cap relief they desperately needed in a trade with the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.

The Lightning sent defenseman Braydon Coburn, forward Cedric Paquette and a second-round selection in the 2022 NHL draft to Ottawa for goaltender Anders Nilsson and forward Marian Gaborik.

Tampa Bay said Gaborik, who played his last NHL game in March 2018, and Nilsson, who is out after a concussion, "will be placed on long-term injury reserve and will not play this season," taking their contracts off the Lightning cap.

Gaborik has one year left on his contract at $4.875 million against the cap, while Nilsson has one year left and $2.6 million against the cap.

Tampa Bay eased its cap problems by moving Coburn, who has one year left on his deal at a $1.7 million cap hit, and Paquette, a depth forward with one year and a $1.65 million cap hit.

The Lightning confirmed to ESPN that Coburn, 35, waived his no-trade clause for Ottawa.

Coburn had four points (one goal) and 16 penalty minutes in 40 games with the Lightning last season, appearing in three playoff games. He averaged 14:03 in ice time. Paquette, 27, recorded 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) and 42 penalty minutes over 61 games with Tampa Bay, and three assists in 25 playoff games.

According to Cap Friendly, the Lightning will have $16.975 million in cap space opened up with three players on long-term injured reserve to start the season: Gaborik, Nilsson and star winger Nikita Kucherov ($9.5 million AAV), who is undergoing hip surgery and will miss the entire regular season.

The combination of salaries moving in the trade and LTIR designations will get the Lightning under the $81.5 million salary cap."
