[Signing] Canucks sign Ilya Mikheyev

Why does everyone tend to have a hate on for smaller players? There is one guy who is just as small, and put up 100 points last season, and 40 goals, and Calgary's about to lose him.

If Garland puts up 115 points I will never complain about his size ever again...

Points per game last season puts him in between Boeser and Pearson. Points per 60 minutes played puts him between Miller and Pearson (Miller was 2nd here to Garland). Hits per 60 minutes puts him between Horvat and Hoglander. In TO he played 3rd line ES minutes with PP2 and PK2 minutes. Top 6 here "could" see his production go up.

Basically he's a younger and faster Pearson with more offensive upside. Signing Mikheyev is not good news for Hoglander. Competition for a top 6 spot just got tougher.

As to the money, it's typical of fans here to believe free agents should sign at bargain basement salaries here. Free agency is not the place to find bargain basement prices. The only way you get a great deal from a UFA is you are a contender or it's been the players lifelong dream to play for that team. Even then, that desrie only gets so much goodwill. If you're a bad team you will overpay. In between those two you'll be paying market price balanced between best offer and best opportunity. Meaning a UFA "might" take a slightly lower deal if he sees better opportunity with one team over another but you'll be paying market price.

Since when has Free Agency been a time for GM’s or players to sign for bargain deals. It’s never been. Free Agency is crazy season for GM’s. Look at some of the contracts that were handed out. Gudbranson got 4M for 4 years. Columbus is nuts!

HAHA. I’d never complain either.

But Gaudreau is what? 5’9??

I mean, Garland is not the same player obviously, and not as gifted or talented. But he’s not nothing either. He goes to the hard areas for a player that’s considered small.

So HF is saying that Mikheyev has "hands of stone", yet he scored 21 goals in 53 games last season with majority Dzone starts.

What am I missing?

I think leaf fans were over stimulated by pornostache breaking goal scoring records which took some objectivity away from their assessment of players down the lineup...

I think Mikheyev can score 20-25 goals again. Some people saying he scores 30 is out of their mind. I can’t see him doing that. Reports are that he doesn’t even have a great shot. Depends on who he’s playing with too when the season starts.

Very young. Mikheyev is what? 27 years old? So the two aren’t comparable. Höglander is starting his career out, and Mikheyev is entering his prime years. Wouldn’t be surprised if this upcoming season he scores 45-50 points. If he scores less than the 32 points he scored with Toronto, that would be a disappointment.

It’s got to be Miller. Getting rid of Garland would be a mistake, he’s so good 5 v 5 and we need more player like him that are on good contracts.   Miller is getting moved guaranteed

Except we're now winger heavy and moving Miller leaves us short at centre

So, are we now waiting for a trade?

to PIT - Garland and Myers

to VAN - Kapanen and Marino

That would be fantastic!  But the Pens are tight to the cap too, so they would need us to take equal money.

Gaudreau had that damn lucky late growth spurt his rookie season. That guy was Nathan Gerbe short

No thanks.... makes us worse IMO

I wouldn’t mind Marino, not really interested in Kapanen.

Is Myers better than Marino?

I mean John Marino is cheaper than Myers, but who’s the better defensive partner?

I don't get this...

Garland > Kapanen

Myers > Marino

Cap space would be the only benefit but Pit can't afford that

So why didn’t he get there?

I’m genuinely asking because I don’t watch any Leafs games.

Is signing a 3rd line guy to a 4.75 million dollar contract much better?

I like the signing because I’m a homer and can appreciate the PK / speed element we need but if Benning does this deal people are looking at it a lot more negatively.

Yeah Mikheyev won't be a third line guy here lol that's pretty obvious.

Pretty impressive that that "3rd line guy" was on pace to score 50 points and 32 goals while being on a line with 2 average to below average players. Imagine what he may do with top 6 mins. and more talented line mates? Thanks for proving my point for me.

What Benning would have done or didn't do is irrelevant.
