I think the power play looks a lot more dynamic and dangerous with Rathbone. Certainly more so than with OEL. And arguably even Hughes (this season anyway). The stats are very clear on this. Canucks power play with Rathbone scores a goal about every two minutes. That’s around 4X the scoring rate without him. And his presence also sees just about every underlying metric boosted significantly (compared to either Hughes or OEL). Take away the power plays (and the 4 PP goals) with Rathbone this season, and the Canucks (who are currently top-5 in PP%) have actually been a middling team with the man advantage. They also haven’t given up a shorthanded goal (which have been killers this season), or even a shorthanded scoring chance, with Rathbone on the power play. While it’s true that Rathbone hasn’t been very good at 5v5, he also hasn’t been the Canucks’ worst Dman at evens. And his positive impacts with the man advantage have been far more significant than whatever negative impacts he’s has on the team’s 5v5 defence. I also think he’d get better (at 5v5) with more game reps alongside a consistent partner on the 3rd pairing. Well thanks for that analytic look at what my eyes have seen with young Jack. No doubt Demko is an elite goalie in the league, and I never feel worried with him in net. With that being said he has really struggled this year. He must have looked behind him 3-5 time last game, not knowing where the puck was/if he had it. Thats a clear sign he isn't on right now and is fighting it. grumpyone
wouldn't Bieksa be a good alternative on the 4th line + PK ?

This is the difference between the 2011 team and we have now. Culture. The 2011 team was better then the sum of their parts. Kesler was drafted expected to be a 3rd line, defensive forward. Became a 40 goal scorer, one of the most dominate 2 way players of his time, and practically single handedly beat the Preds. Guys like Hansen, Higgins, Juice, Hammer, the list goes on left it all on the ice, every Gord damn night. They played above their labeling of 3rd liner, or defensive defensemen. Burrows was undrafted and playing ball hockey, only to become one of the greatest grinders in the game, then a first line scoring 17 points in the playoffs and one of the franchises biggest goals. Losing guys like Rome, who was no more then a 3rd pair D shook our team. Now we have some many 3rd pair D they are completely interchangeable and do not effect the outcome of a game whatsoever. Losing Raymond was the same. These guys brought more value on the ice then their name did on the roster sheet. That team had a culture that pushes every single player on the ice to be the best version they could possible be. Many of the players on our team pushed themselves past their own projections. It was a team and culture that expected you to work as hard as the hardest working guy on the ice. What does this team have? A losing culture, bad, lazy habits, and a team that looks like a group of individuals most nights on the ice. Who's setting the culture, who's pushing themselves to be the best version of themselves? This team should be far better then they are, you couldn't likely argue that the last few years. Miller can set a career high then come in after earning a contract and look unmotivated. OEL with a A on his chest can't make a good decision for the life of him. Demko doesn't trust the guys to defend the back door tap in, or even play competent D in front of him. It's wild people called fake news for so long when multiple reports came out about the culture in Vancouver. Look at how low we have sunken in the last 10 years. What the hell happened here..
