The problem is no one really wants any of these guys. There is a reason why they have to get Boeser’s agents involved.

Horvat is best trading chip, teams will line up for him. This type of hockey is not sustainable against those teams in the Playoffs. Big changes are coming.

I think the opportunity will show itself at the TDL with injuries.

like right now the Avs have McKinnon and Landescog out..   it this was Feb - Mar ?

The best thing to do is keep him (Boeser) grabbing points til the end of Jan , the opportunity will present itself.

This team’s problem is the number of guys we’d have to tie a handful of draft slots to to get rid of each of them before we could even start a rebuild - Boeser, OEL, Myers, Miller, Pearson…

Yep.

Calgary is already sniffing around. Lucic and a 3rd or 4th might be all we get.

The question is how much do they want cap space?

Rather just keep Boeser instead of bringing in a scumbag we'd have to immediately suspend for character issues.  You don't want a locker room cancer like Lucic anywhere near your young players.

How much should oel be paid for a defender on pace for 40 points

do tell

And if points was the only measure of quality, we'd all be raving about how Hughes is playing so much better than he was last year. But almost everyone would agree that he hasn't looked right for most of the season.

He plays a game that a 4 million dollar D man can bring. Overpaid and slowing down.

I don’t agree. He might be over paid by 1 million but just sitting there saying that he’s replaceable at a position that is of the highest premium in this league to me seems highly speculative. One more season and he’s off the books. His contract won’t be a problem in the long run.

That’s just one example.

You only take him on for the rest of the season. Sit him in the press box who cares?

If it frees up 6 mil to re-sign Bo and Kuz you get it done.

That’s what management is paid to do though. Find a way to get it done.

There will be teams interested, they’re gonna have to swallow their ego and take less than they probably want to.

Nah, it’s about how much we have to give up to get rid of the awful contracts. No-one is taking OEL at 7.25 mil, or Myers for 6 mil, or Boeser at 6.9, or Miller for 8 for 8 years … at least not without the Canucks taking the other team’s bad contracts in trade. The bad contracts around the league consuming cap space are the biggest obstacles for most teams, and we have about as bad as it gets.

You complain about how he is severely overpaid yet you have no answer as to how he should be paid?

You seem like the expert

I am waiting for an answer

Well Cam Charron, who is an actual expert, rates OEL as a third-pair quality guy. How much would I pay for a 3rd pair D? Definitely not anywhere near 7.26m.

Toronto and Calgary are already interested in Myers and Boeser.

Might have to retain or take on some salary for the rest of the season. Who cares?

Anyone notice that OEL has had his minutes reduced by quite a bit recently? Played under 18mins tonight.

That tells me kuz is here to stay...awesome !

Some late comments, including on the above two quotes.

1. After  losing 7 games in a row to start the season, the Canucks now have 500 record after going 8 and 3 in their last 11 games.

2. Another exciting game with a comeback overtime win, just like against Montreal.

3. However, this game is different from the Montreal game. The Canucks were the better team against Montreal and started strong but were let down by some soft goal-tending.  Tonight, San Jose was the better team and the Canucks are lucky to come away with 2 points. And both San Jose and Montreal are weak teams.

4. The Canucks are doing just well enough to retain some hope of making the playoffs this season but have some obvious flaws.  Even after the win tonight the quality of play seems to make it increasingly obvious that the Canucks need to make significant changes.

5. OEL is playing less, mainly because his PK time has dropped to almost nothing. But that seems to have improved his play. And the average opinion of OEL's play on CDC is too low. He had two nice assists tonight and, based on underlying analytics, his defensive play has been pretty good compared with other D's on the team (although none of the regular Ds are doing well defensively).

6. Kuz and Horvat are getting more unaffordable every game.  With Kuz, although he is a high skill player, he has been helped a lot by playing with Petey. Even tonight, when he is playing on a different line, his two points were due mainly to a) a great pass from Petey and b) a great shot by Petey. Kuz has had a lot tap-ins. That is certainly inflating his value. The way to capitalize on that is to trade him at the deadline. If the Canucks sign him they will almost certainly overpay

7. The Aman line was excellent tonight and not just because of Joshua's two goals. Their underlying analytics were great tonight.

Gadjovich with his second career goal. And it was a beauty. Lol. This team can't defend a lick, but hey. As long as we keep scoring timely goals at least we're exciting. Honestly, if Kuzmenko is smart. He doesn't get greedy and signs a 5ish mil per year contract here. He gets so many gift wrapped goals just by being next to the goal on the PP. 7 of his 13 goals are PP. And of those 7 PP goals  they are from Miller and Petey shooting the puck off his stick and into the net. If he thinks he's worth more than 6mil, let him walk. This PP can find another spectator to stand near the net to tap in pucks. Hell, we had Chiasson do it for pennies on the dollar.
