[REPORT] Canucks linked to an intriguing Right Handed Defenseman: The interest is mutual

Recommended Posts

The Canucks have dressed a long list of needs entering the 2023 off-season, and their first objective will be to shed some cap space. The reports indicate that the Canucks have already begun their shopping.

The colored Insider, Eliotte Friedman, was on Donnie and Dhali earlier today and stated that the Canucks could in on possibly the top free agent blueliner to hit the market this summer.

The Interest is Mutual

Damon Severson, who spent the first years of his career with the New Jersey Devils, will be hitting the market since the parties have announced they'd be parting ways.

‘'According to Friedman, if #Canucks can clear cap space, absolutely they can call NJD for Severson's rights. Severson, he would absolutely be interested in a place like Vancouver.''

Damon Severson, a 2nd Round Pick in 2012, is a right-handed shot, 6'02'', and 205 pounds defenseman. The author of 79 points in 161 regular season games over the past two years, he's very well known for his two-way game and could potentially be an excellent match to Quinn Hughes. Coming off a 6-year and $25M deal, the expectation is that he'll hit the market with a $36M over 6 years in mind.

Severson is considered one of the top two assets in the game when looking into advanced statistics. Adding a defenseman of his type would most likely complete the team's right side, along with Filip Hronek and Ethan Bear.

Severson will turn 29 in August; tying him to the Canucks until he's 35 years of age doesn't feel right. What if the Canucks were to manage to get him under contract in the 5 to mid-5s for 5 years? Would that make more sense? Would that be a better fit for their plans moving forward?

Only thing about Severson 29 RD-6'2 very good D man-- He will want between 5.5 --- 6 million X 5 yrs ?

Hronek 25 RD - next season will want 7.5 million X 5 years?

Hughes 7.8

Hronek   1 yr left 4.4--- Next contract 7- 7.5 million X 5 minimum.

Severson 6 million X 5 yrs ? Will be tough to fit this player in..

$6M x 6yrs.

Ugh…Myers and LE special.

Although it feels like 6 years, Myers' contract is only 5 years long.

Severson is not the shutdown guy we are looking for. He is about as reliable as Myers.

He's a bit better than Myers, but yeah... Not the D we need, going to cost too much, for too long, only to be an ill fit on this roster and have fans worrying about how we get rid of him and his cap hit sooner than later.

No thanks.

Well every time I have watched Severson he's good for 90% of the time and then he suddenly does these stupid brain fart things that undo all the good work. I don't rate him much higher than Myers for the same reasons. Maybe Myers is good 85% of the time...but it's close.

The only way I would agree to this is if OEL was going the other way. Of course he would have to agree to it, but New Jersey is a pretty good team, so it’s not impossible.

Severson is UFA - no reason for NJD to take any cap back.

NJD is moving on from Severson because they don't have the cap space to extend him - OEL is a 7.26M cap hit.  NJD has so many players to extend including Meier and Bratt.  OEL also wouldn't fit their speed game.  NJD is one if not the fastest skating team out there - they insist on speed and pace. That's simply not OEL.

Idk... the Hronek trade just seemed like a desperation trade. They could've signed some players for free without giving up draft picks.

The jury is still out on Hronek, but this management has been suspect with cap management, even if they are good at evaluating pro players. Certainly much better than Benning.

You are correct. I hadn’t thought it true. I just want OEL gone so badly that it’s clouded my judgement.
