So say Calgary wanted to start the rebuild, and the rebuild started with them trading their captain Jarome Iginla. What do you think they can get for him?

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

He's 35, making 7 million this season, and will be a UFA at the end of the season. So not much. Maybe a couple late round draft picks.

Depends which teams want him. I could see Washington, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and St.Louis as teams that might have some interest, although this is just my speculation. Here's some ideas for each, there might be issues since I just came up with it quickly, but these could be a bases to a deal.

To Pit: Jarome Iginla
To Cgy: Simon Despres, 1st

To Stl: Patrik Berglund, Brett Sonne
To Cgy: Jarome Iginla

To Wsh: Jarome Iginla
To Cgy: Dimitri Orlov, 2nd

To Nsh: Jarome Iginla
To Cgy: Colin Wilson or Craig Smith, 3rd

I was thinking a Tyler Kennedy package for Iginla could go down too. Fits both teams needs nicely too.

Just imagine how much more they could of gotten if they traded him a couple years ago and started the rebuild when they should have.

That is, if he is traded.

Iginla is the type of player that you want to retire in your colours. Unless he is asking for a trade, he will/should not be moved.

Hypothetically though, impact player, top prospect, 1st.

Calgary shouldn't even consider moving him, I mean he is to the Flames what Linden was/is to the Canucks, a terrific guy on and off the ice who you just can't replace. No matter what the offer was, I don't see Iginla moving, he is probably the only reason the team hasn't been last in the league but instead being in the middle (close to the playoffs a few times as well) in the last few years.

Jarome should be given a shot at success. With the way the Flames are going that will never happen.

To Vancouver - Iginla
To Calgary - Luongo, Ballard, Raymond, 2nd.

Luongo and Kipper work in tandem.

I think a reasonable comparison could be drawn between Jarome and Keith Tkachuk when he was about to enter UFA status as well (though Iggy should get a bit more still). When the Blues traded Tkachuk to the Thrashers he was also 35 and scored at 0.73 p.p.g. (Jarome was at 0.82 last season), but he's not as much of an offensive catalyst for the Blues as Jarome is for the Flames (he's been and will be their go-to guy for offense probably until he retires or gets traded, whichever one comes first) and his streak of eleven NHL seasons without less than thirty goals is pretty impressive and it shows just how lethal and important he is to the team's success.

I think if he was dealt at the deadline the return would be a bit more than a roster player, 1st round pick and a couple more picks/ decent prospects (Keith got Metropolit, 1st and 3rd then a 2nd the year after); I wouldn't be surprised though if someone like Philly really paid through their teeth and gave him a return similar to what was paid for Rick Nash (sure Rick's younger, but Jarome's better, even at age 35, and when the Flames GM finally realizes he has to rebuild he'd want to have the team off to a running start so I'd say one or even two roster players, a prospect and a first wouldn't be out of the question if he really got his way)

I'm not sure there's ever been an easier example of what a 35 year old pending UFA could fetch in a trade than Iginla. Considering he got to the Flames via a trade with Dallas for Joe Nieuwendyk (Corey Millen was included with Iginla coming back to the Flames) you could reasonable assume a similar return for Iginla now. Both were pending UFAs who had been quite successfull to that point, so the only significant difference is that Nieuwendyk (29) was younger at the time of the trade, so Iginla as a 35 year old should not be able to garner a future star of Iginila's calibre.

You know - that is a good proposal.

Pittsburgh could part with Despres with Pouliot, Maata, Morrow, Harrington and Dumoulin all coming up.

Dupuis- Crosby - Iginla
Neal - Malkin - Kunitz
Cooke - Sutter - Kennedy
Glass - Adams - Vitale

Yikes....

It was more of a joke proposal than anything, but if it worked out would that be so bad?
The Canucks would dump a lot of their dead weight and get one terrific player in return who would undoubtedly help them in the playoffs, especially in the grit and scoring department.

If Iginla makes it to free agency, I definitely wouldn't mind making a serious offer for a huge cup run next year. I doubt there will be a season at all, so no deadline deals here, but I wouldn't mind offering a high salary, short-term deal to give the Canucks (and Iginla) a shot at the Cup.

Just ditch Booth and Ballard somehow for cap space, re-sign Higgins.

Sedin - Sedin - Iginla
Burrows - Kesler - Jensen/Kassian
Higgins - _____ - Hansen
_____ - Lapierre - Weise

I agree. And if we have enough cap space we should sign Perry as well (only if Jensen isn't quite ready though)

Sedin - Sedin - Iginla
Kassian - Kesler - Perry
Burrows - ???? - Higgins
Volpatti - Lapierre - Hansen

Iginla would net a high-end prospect and a 1st round pick from a contender.

That said, I don't think Calgary will or should trade him.

The only way Iginla gets traded is if he requests for it.

His value if traded at the beginning of the season would be determined by the new CBA. If the CBA has the proposed changes like a team being able to retain half of a players cap hit and or salary, Iginla would have more value but Calgary also isn't in a favorable cap position. They are right up there with the Canucks in terms of being close to the salary cap. In all likelihood, teams close to the cap now are going to have to make trades to get under the cap.

Because Iginla's ratio of cap hit to impact aren't that great, he has low trade value since the Flames can't really retain any of his hit and most teams that would be interested in Iginla are close to the cap. Since the return wouldn't be great for Iginla, there is no way Calgary trades him.
