[Report] Canucks Considered Trading Edler to Detroit

The Vancouver Canucks apparently considered trading defenceman Alexander Edler to the Detroit Red Wings last summer before his no-trade clause kicked in.

The Red Wings were unsure about giving up three pieces for Edler, so when the Canucks asked for four pieces, the deal was killed.

Jason Botchford from the Province reports:

"A deal to the Detroit Red Wings was considered, and close enough, but was snuffed when the asking price was too rich for Ken Holland.

The Canucks wanted four pieces in return, one of which was a first-round draft pick. But the Wings weren’t even sure about giving up three, so considering four was a non-starter, killing the deal."

Back at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft when the rumours of the Canucks moving Edler first surfaced, it was reported the Red Wings were one of the teams in on the defenceman along with the Anaheim Ducks.

Sportnset’s Nick Kypreos said at the time the asking price was three pieces: two roster players and a first round pick for Edler.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said after selecting Bo Horvat, ninth overall, that he “wanted to get into the top-10″ to select a player like him.

I wonder if the acquisition of the ninth overall pick for goaltender Cory Schneider quelled any interest to trade Edler. The Canucks didn’t need to move Edler anymore to get the necessary assets to move up in the draft.

With no urgency to move up, the Canucks probably decided they weren’t going to trade Edler unless they got a fourth piece and a deal that they felt was lopsided in their favour.

...come on MG, try harder and get him out of here in return for a proven top 6 point producer or a 1st rounder+ while you have the chance and his value isn't rock bottom! Like the idea he attempted to but price was too high it seems...Edler for Pacioretty or something, do it up MG, time's ticking zomg!!

Also wonder what MG was possibly asking for? I'm guessing a 1st, Tatar/Jurco, Brendan Smith, and a bottom 6er. Seems pricy but considering Edlers value wasn't this low at the time, could be possible and makes sense. A 1st to stock pile picks, an A level prospect, a young replacement for Edler, and a roster player.

Media tried their utmost to chip away at the value of our prized asset, gt(that was sitting in the shop window). These efforts might succeed in depreciating the asset we're shopping. It also serves a purpose in getting our rabid fan-base frustrated(oh, what mighta'ben?), thus ratcheting additional pressure upon MG to make ANY deal(like the Roy-debacle).

IGNORE media-mighta'bens is probably best for Van's interests.

Looking back at the summer, MG believed that he would be able to make a good hockey trade for Lui, and we know how that ended. Gillis has not given me any reason to believe he could maximize the value in a deal for Edler.

What really concerns me about Gillis is that he may be feeling the heat on his poor trade record and will pass up what should be good hockey deals in order to wait for a deal that makes him look like he won the deal hands down. And that deal ain't coming folks.
