[Waivers] LA Mike Richards

Technically there are only 5 teams ahead of the Canucks in the waiver priority (as it's based on the overall standings from last season, if I remember correctly).

I know Richards has a helluva salary hit, but between the cap space we already have, and with Bieksa injured for some time, we could fit him in, and almost immediately would slot into our 2C role...

With more minutes, I have to think that Richards would be a significantly better player than he's shown so far.

Bieksa will be out until after the trade deadline, so moves can be made to shore things up cap/salary wise... I don't think Buffalo (tank nation) or Florda (youth movement) takes him, Edmonton probably would but who knows what they're thinking. I don't think Calgary would take him for the same reasons as Florida, and NYI have better producing centers who are quite a bit younger.

Actually Edmonton loses priority since they already claimed someone off waivers in Boston.

So I think by process of elimination, the Canucks may actually have a good shot at putting a claim in on him... slide Bieksa to LTIR claim Richards... move some pieces around at the deadline (cap dumps) and be able to fit Bieksa back on the roster when he comes back.

Richards is only 29, still has at least a good 3-4 years left in him.

hmmm I don't know that he gets claimed. LA must have been working the phones hard to get some return and unless they were willing to eat some cap hit there would have been no takers.

If I were a bottom feeding team, I don't think I would want a disgruntled Mike Richards on my roster. None of the contenders have the cap space.

I can't believe he is only 29... I would have guessed he was the same age as the Sedins.

He would certainly be an upgrade on Higgins on the 2nd line LW (I wouldn't move Bonino off that line). We do need another top 6.

Sedin-Sedin-Vrbata

Richards-Bonino-Burrows

Higgins-Richardson-Hansen

Matthias-Horvat-Dorsett

Vey

That leaves Kassian still as trade bait... him and Hansen could be packaged for a decent return and free up a roster spot for Jensen.

WOW who will pick him up?!?

And who does LA have in mind to replace Richards on the 4th line?

I'm gonna make a bold prediction and say he doesn't get claimed

Bold indeed. It would screw LA up cap-wise, so I think they had an idea that he would get picked up if waived.

Your understanding of the waiver process seems to be all wrong.

It is based of of the current standings, not last years, and claiming a player makes no effect to your spot in the order.

How many people read the title and thought 'wow'? I know he is overpaid and playing 4th line minutes, but he may be the most valuable player to be put on waivers.

Kings' cap trouble (Voynov) may have a lot to do with this move.

They might be in trouble cap wise, but not because of Voynov. His salary was counted against their cap earlier in the season but back in November the NHL and NHLPA agreed to let them put his salary in LTIR so it doesn't count against the cap.

Another back diving contract, worse than luongo's

Cap recapture penalty will be brutal!

Richards has $5.75M cap hit for 5 seasons after this one. He's being paid $7M this season, $6M, $5.5M, $4.5M, $3M and $3M in remaining yrs.

Kings had tried to find trade interest for Mike Richards with a few teams over past month (including Toronto and Wpg). Now on waivers!

It is based of of the current standings, not last years, and claiming a player makes no effect to your spot in the order.

If one club makes a claim for a player, then that player is transferred to that club. If more than one club makes a claim, the one with the lowest points in the standings receives the player, unless the claim is made outside the season (ie. during the playoffs or preseason) or before November 1st, in which case the team who finished lowest in the previous season receives the player. If the teams are tied, then a series of tiebreakers are used.

Ah, my understanding was partially correct, previous season standings are used as a tie break measure between more than one team making a claim, up until November 1st of the current season... so yeah, I also thought that once a claim is made, a team's order in the list to claim goes to the bottom of the list.

Anyway, yeah it looks unlikely Canucks get a sniff, a shame because I think he still has a lot of game left in him, and can be worth the salary he's being paid.
