[Signing] Maxim Lapierre signs in Sweden

Recommended Posts

Veteran UFA squeeze continues as ex-Canuck Max Lapierre signs in Sweden:

Maxim Lapierre, also with over 600 games on his resume, has signed with Modo of the Swedish Hockey League, per TVA. It’s a one-year deal with a second year option, and also has an out clause should Lapierre land an NHL contract in the next 15 days.

Lapierre, 30, split last season between Pittsburgh and St. Louis (he was traded for Goc, ironically enough). A known agitator, he finished the year with 11 points in 80 games, and appeared in all five games of the Pens’ opening-round playoff loss to the Rangers.

Prior to his time in Pittsburgh and St. Louis, “Yappy Lappy” played in Montreal, Anaheim and Vancouver. His best season came in 2009-10, when he scored a career-high 15 goals and 28 points, earning a handful of Selke votes.

It stands to reason that, given what we’ve seen recently, more veteran skaters will either be forced to take overseas gigs like Lapierre and Goc have, or wait for training camp PTOs.

The likes of Curtis Glencross, Brad Boyes, Lee Stempniak and Marek Zidlicky are all still without contracts.

Lappy sucked in Pittsburgh. I liked him as a Canuck, and thought he tried his hardest to adjust when asked to take fewer PIMs, but with few teams signing FAs, makes sense he goes to MoDo. Might be good for his offensive mojo, he was a 15 goal scorer in MTL but hasn't been able to replicate.

I'd sooner have Lapps and Kas at a combined 2.3M then Prust at 3.5.

But that's none of my business.

Yeah that would be awesome 2 great leaders with great values to bring in the new generation.

Oh wait, lappy would be taking the spot that is open for virt/shink/jensen

But that's none of my business.

Lappy was flat-out terrible in Pittsburgh.

Regular: 35GP, 0G, 2A, -13, 5 giveaways, 1 takeaway

Playoffs: 5GP, 0G, 0A, -2, 0 giveaways, 0 takeaways

He was good on faceoffs in the playoffs, but that's it. Not surprised that he didn't get a contract.

He is still an NHLer. This is a failure by the league to retain talent imho.

Nah.

44 rookies played at least half the season last year. Probably even more will be coming next year. There are only 690 roster spots to fill in the league. As talent comes in, the less effective get pushed out.

I would have taken Zidlicky over Weber, and Glencross over Vey, all day every day.
