[Trade] Predators trade P.K. Subban to Devils for Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, 2019 2nd-round pick, 2020 2nd-round pick

Recommended Posts

Santini is basically a bottom pairing defenceman at best, Davies could be decent puck moving defenceman but hasn't touched the AHL yet at 22 and the picks are 2nd rounders. Steal for NJD but this might have mainly been a bit of a cap dump.

New Jersey really gearing up, hopefully Hall will want to stay after a move like this. They've got a top forward in Hall, a future superstar in Hughes, now an elite defenceman coming off a bad year.

This is a team that is rebuilding on the fly with so many good young players. All they need is goaltending.

Forwards: Hughes, Hall, Zacha, Hischier. Future center depth that will probably be the best in the NHL. Superstar winger in Hall, they could just use a UFA winger here or there when it comes the time to contend.

Defencemen: Subban, Vatanen, Severson, Butcher. All great puck-movers, they could use a top shutdown guy though but that's a very solid top-4 now and in 2-3 years time still. This blueline needed a veteran and Subban is just that.

Goaltending is the main issue.

This team will be a contender in anywhere from 1-3 years depending on how quickly those 3 future superstar centers develop and whether they can find a decent goaltender.

This is a trade that wouldnt have happened if teams weren't scared that the cap is going down (in terms of the return). See the Marleau trade

We need to try & capitalize on this ASAP.

For a team lacking assets, its hard to look at that Marleau deal & wonder why we couldn't have done it.

Either way this is a prime opportunity to make a deal and/or gain assets.

They've also got Smith on the way on D.

Damn nice trade for NJ.

Bottom pair D, prospect & a pair of seconds. Soft deal for Nashville.

Too bad we couldn't get in on that just from a value standpoint, I don't think Tyson Barrie will come as cheap.

Barrie is younger, and a much better teammate.  However, he is a coming UFA in 2020.  Cost might be similar.

You do have to wonder.. his third team in fairly short span. He may be talented, but me thinks he's not invaluable to a team.

So glad we didn't land him. Think I've told this before but I have a buddy that's pretty high up in hockey circles and has a connection to the Habs told me when PK got traded to Nashville that in the Habs locker room out of the 23 guys in the locker room PK was 23rd on the popularity scale. They couldn't have been happier to see him leave. Pretty sure Nashville is saying the same thing now.

and canucks didnt offer something similar? subban woulda been perfect for the canucks ;( again JB failed ..he tried in 2016 t get em, and he didnt bother trying now ....

We have a great character young core.  Why bring PK and his dominant personality into our group?

Why bring a Norris winning Dman to a team that very much needs a Norris winning Dman? It's rhetorical.
