  1. Lammikko had a pretty good year in the Swiss-A league. Bet Tocchett would have liked him.

Yea he was solid - size, 51% on the dot, 93 hits, killed penalties. Underlying stats were pretty meh but he felt better than a lot of the expensive vets we had over the years.

  2. Now I remember why I don't shop at Choices all the time. I'll go broke!

      canucklehead44

One time I was at choices and Eddie Lack accidentally bumped his shopping cart into mine. Tall guy.

  3. how about lucic, oscar cansk, jack boltman and a second rounder for boeser, rathbone and a 3rd rounder from calgary. lucic is on an expiring contract. dansk is a goalie, boltman a rd and the picks.

I don't see Nashville having the assets coming our way unless we retain cap on Boeser. Nino Niederreiter and Fabbro for Boeser could work but a weird trade.

From NYI Bailey + late pick for Boeser could work. We save 1.7M in cap and a year less contract. Bailey having only one more year left on his contract makes him a bit more moveable as a rental.

  4. Glad to see that Tyler Motte is getting such positive reviews in New York. Good, honest player who brings it every game. Hope he signs for what he's worth, which is more than the minimum.

      canucklehead44

I think he would have re-signed for less than what we are paying Dickinson. We lost draft ranking, cap space, and got a far worse player out of it. I really liked Motte

  5. Markstrom was just walked from this team, it still hurts!

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Agreed. Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli, + return for Demko, + return for Virtanen > Demko, Schmidt, Virtanen

  6. Not sure why anyone would be paying a premium for goaltending anymore.

I kind of agree, especially for a backup.

Husso, Oettinger, and Swayman are legit. Sucks we are paying 3.4 in dead cap for two backups not on the roster who had a combined 11 wins, 23 losses when we could have probably signed two guys at $750k to battle for a backup role and would have likely performed better.

  7. Imagine letting Tanev walk.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

@Alflives its like Benning actually put together a good team and then let go of half of the key pieces.

Re-signing Tanev, Toffoli, Markstrom and selling high on Demko & Virtanen is what I expected we were going to do. Schmidt, Holtby, Virtanen we all so horrible. I think we could have been competitive last season. Tanev, Toffoli, Markstrom >>> Schmidt, Virtanen, Demko and that is before accounting for getting some juicy assets for Demko and probably a 2nd round pick or decent young player for Virtanen.

  8. If Motte gets moved due to contract issues, do we have anyone that can take over for him? I'm concerned about our PK if he's traded.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Motte is such a great fit in Vancouver, it would be a shame if we couldn't find the space for him. I doubt he is going to demand something crazy like 3 million. 3 x 1.75 is what I would expect

  9. Bring back Lee 'Scorin' Goren.

    1. canucklehead44

Bailey is basically the Lee Goren of this generation but he is fast instead of being really slow.

Jim Robson said he was talking to Pavol Demitra (when he was leading the Blues in scoring) and didn't realize who he was talking to and that was the exact moment he decided to retire. With Hughson it seems like he wanted to leave at 100%.

  13. Cannot believe I just stomached that joke of a fight.  Paul vs Mayweather was just utter garbage and zero knockout or meaningful actual boxing

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Mayweather is a defensive fighter not known for power, is 44 and was giving up 50 lbs. He toyed with him for sure but Logan isn't a slouch either, he has been working hard with Ryan Garcia and showed up in fantastic shape. He hit Logan with some pretty big shots that slowed him down big time.

  14. Does anybody actually have confidence in Benning as a GM?

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Benning is a terrible GM. 7 years of a losing team, spent to the cap, traded away more picks than acquired, handcuffed the team with terrible UFA signings now that we actually have a core to build around. He never seems to think outside of the box or have creative ways of making the team better. He overpays and isn't very smart about trading off assets. I have zero confidence in him and time after time again he seems completely directionless and is a bit of a laughing stock to the hockey world.

  15. I'm preemptively mad at the league for all our 4pm games against Toronto, gotta cater to Toronto after all.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Easier to catch the games at 4 than at 10 - also there are a lot of Canucks fans who live in EST as well and it is a great chance for them to watch without having to stay up ridiculously late.

  16. It snowed in downtown Canada already.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

It was 26 degrees the weekend before and 16 with sun this weekend. I am actually going camping. It's pretty wild. Fall is awesome out here, Winter isn't bad (cold enough to play pond hockey but nothing compared to Ottawa & Montreal). Spring is awful though - BC has way better springs.

  17. Thanks to San Jose, it is possible that Ottawa has 2 top 5 picks.  In fact, there's an outside chance Ottawa could feasibly draft twice in the top 3.

His trades have been mostly good since the Karlsson trade

      - 4th for Nemestnikov (22 points in 45 games, 27 years old)
      - 3rd + garbage for Connor Brown (32 points 50 games) + garbage
      - Stone at deadline for Brannstrom (high end D prospect) and a 2nd
      - Dzingel at deadline for Duclair (21 goals in 49 games) and 2 2nds
      - Duchene for a 1st and two prospects (CBJ got 22 points out of Duchene, this year he has 10 goals making 8 million, Abramov 15 goals in 33 AHL games)

      - Karlsson for Norris (42 pts 40 games AHL, top 3 prospect for the team), Tierney (over .5 pp/g on a good contract, still young), Balcers (27 points in 23 AHL games), DeMelo (20 minute per night dman, +7), first round pick in upcoming draft (could be a top 5), plus two 2nd round picks

Players going out goals this season: 42
      Salary (players listed): 32 million
Players coming in goals this season: 52
Salary (players listed, not including prospects): 11 million

      Prospects: 5
      Picks: 1st (2), 2nd (5)

So they saved a tonne of money, are getting better production, added five solid to great prospects), and two firsts and five 5ths. That is a pretty rapid path to a rebuild despite not really getting much worse on the ice.

  18.

Currently with Sutter and Graovac on IR, Canucks have zero natural centres under contract in Utica.  Perron, Jasek natural wingers are currently playing out of position.

Very surprised that this hasn't been addressed yet.  Benning and R Johnson need to be looking for PTO's or trades to bring depth for the organization and help our prospects out in Utica develop in their natural position.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

Maybe send Mac down who has played centre and bring Goldy/Baer/Boucher/Bailey up? Although I think the reason why they have Mac up and not the others is because their earnings in the AHL:

      Goldy - $900K
      Baer - $3.74M
      Boucher - $450K
      Bailey - $165K
      MacEwen - $70K

Calling a guy up on a two way contract and then sitting them is often a bonus/reward to that player to earn an NHL salary for a short stretch. Even though Mac has played 8 games I think he has been on the roster for 20, those extra 12 games earning him an additional $125K (IE he made double sitting on the bench in the NHL for 12 games than he would have playing 72 games in the AHL).

Also has the ECHL become completely useless? Back in the day we used it regularly as a farm team to the AHL (Brandon Nolan, Jesse Schultz, Alex Burrows, Rob McVicar, Yann Sauve, Tim Smith etc were call-ups)

I guess we had Mitch Eliot play three games down there and David Pope is a Canucks prospect. Just surprised we don't have more down there - does it have to do with contract restrictions IE not enough contract space to have guys play in the ECHL?

  19. Jared McCann the one that got away? Hard to believe we traded him away for Gudbranson and peanuts..

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

McCann is exactly what I expected him to be when we traded him (a good middle six player). I thought he had more upside than Virtanen although I am a big fan of how Virtanen plays as well.

I hated the trade at the time but I at least expected Gudbranson to be solidish - like Myers but with more physicality.

Benning would have been a good addition to Gills & Gilman. Gillis - President, Benning - GM, Gilman - Assistant VP.

Benning has that raw scouting ability

Gillis is great at building a culture / organization. Thinking outside the box, studying elite athletes in different sports, and spending money on things like sleep therapists and dieticians to give the team an extra advantage.

Gilman is a great architect. Thorough cap knowledge and great on the finance side. The Luongo contract was completely legal at the time - he simply outsmarted the system and we retroactively got penalized.

  21. Goldobin + 4th for Lias Andersson. I would love this guy. I think he needs a change of scenery.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

If the Islanders offered Josh Ho-Sang and a 4th for Juolevi would you do that trade?

I could see a Juolevi - Andersson swap but I would never do that deal.

  22. I saw on twitter somewhere canucks are scouting the Kings a lot. Maybe toffoli?

What would it cost? Virt + prospect like Gadj?

But hes a rental so idk :/

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

I could see something like Baertschi and Virtanen for Toffoli. I don't think I'd like it - Virtanen and Toffoli are putting up identical numbers, Virtanen is much younger and is earning 1/3 the salary. Plus he isn't a UFA at the end of the year.

Maybe Josh Leivo, Sven Baertschi, and a conditional 2nd? (becomes a 3rd if Vancouver misses the playoffs).

  23. I would honestly want Benning to try and get Taylor Hall. We NEED another scoring winger. If Petey line isn't going, we have no other option and it showed the pass couple of games.

    1. canucklehead44

      canucklehead44

@Nuxfanabroad Taylor Hall is going to be a free agent and will probably cost around 10M, the price we are paying for Loui Eriksson, Ryan Spooner's buyout, and the Luongo recapture haha.

I am surprised we can't get a deal done with Dallas. I was looking at incomes per team and Dallas was in the lower 1/3rd, not way down but definitely below average.

      To Vancouver
      - Andrew Cogliano
      - Martin Hanzal (LTIR)

      To Dallas
      - Eriksson 50% retained

Dallas saves $3M+ in actual cash, gamble on Eriksson bouncing back a bit in a market he had a lot of success in.

Cogliano is probably a comparable quality player BUT I think his style of play is better suited to the Canucks. He is a lot quicker which suits our fast paced rush style which Eriksson is a horrible fit for. Vancouver is the worst team in the league for generating office from shots - Eriksson's bread and butter is rebounds.
