Seismologists record more than 3,500 'tiny tremors' on Vancouver Island in nine days

Natural Resources Canada seismologist John Cassidy, otherwise known as Earthquake Guy, says these are not earthquakes but rather a good reminder that we live in an active subduction zone

Croatia has been hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), causing major damage to Petrinja, a town close to its epicenter. It killed at least one person, according to authorities.

The quake hit the Balkan country at 12:20 p.m. local time (6:20 a.m. ET) and its epicenter was located 44 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of the capital Zagreb, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The government-owned Croatian News Agency HINA had earlier reported the quake having a magnitude of 6.3.
These destinations were overwhelmed by tourists. Here's how they're doing now

The EMSC said it was the largest earthquake to hit Croatia so far this year, adding it could "generate significant damage at close epicentral distances."
Darinko Dumbović, the mayor of Petrinja, implored for immediate emergency aid, saying that "half the town has been destroyed," HINA reported.

Saturday, February 13th 2021, 1:14 pm - At least two dozen people were injured, according to reports from the Kyodo news agency.

IWAKI, Japan (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit off the coast of eastern Japan on Saturday, injuring dozens of people and triggering widespread power outages, but there appeared to be no major damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake had a 7.3 magnitude and its epicentre was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of 60 km (36 miles), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It shook buildings for some time after it hit, shortly after 11:00 p.m. (1400 GMT).

Houses and offices in the capital Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres away, also swayed and shook. No tsunami warning had been issued, the meteorological agency said.

At least two dozen people were injured, according to reports from the Kyodo news agency.

A Reuters cameraman on location in Fukushima said his 10th floor hotel room shook for some time. One man at the hotel was taken to hospital after falling and hitting his head on a door, the cameraman said.

Although injured, the man was still able to walk, the cameraman said.

Television footage also showed broken glass from shop fronts.

Lovely. A 7.3 just offshore of the prefecture where 3 reactors melted down(our 10th anny is coming up, honeys!)

It's a coupla days later, I watch NHK news & they take 10 F***ING minutes to get to this story. I've been enlightened on vaccines, pandemic origins & Myanmar uprisings, waiting for 'the pleasure'.

The mainstream moss-media is stuck on a rock in your fav Jpnese garden. It's enough to turn a reasonable sheep into a raving, bleating lunatic. GoodGawd I hate the media of the 21st C!*+=&%###!!!! :^0!!!##$$&%&''(().

Thousands feared dead after major earthquake hits Haiti

7.2-magnitude quake that struck 150 km from capital was bigger, more shallow than disastrous 2011 quake

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eight kilometres from the town of Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, about 150 km west of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, on Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said. (CBC News)

A major earthquake struck western Haiti on Saturday morning, likely causing high casualties and widespread disaster, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and sending shock waves across the Caribbean, where people fled their homes for fear they might collapse.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eight kilometres from the town of Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, about 150 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 10 km, the USGS said.

That made the earthquake bigger and more shallow than the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Haiti 11 years ago, killing an estimated 250,000 people, flattening buildings and leaving many homeless.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning after the quake, lifting it shortly thereafter, although Haitian media outlets reported some people along the coast had already fled to the mountains.

The USGS has issued a "red alert" estimating thousands of fatalities.

"High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread," it said in an update at 16:07:35 UTC on its website. "Past red alerts have required a national or international response."

Haiti's Civil Protection service said on Twitter there were initial reports of likely casualties from its teams.

People 'were flying outside'

Images posted on social media — which Reuters was not immediately able to verify — showed homes and part of a church in the nearby town of Jérémie reduced to rubble.

"In my neighbourhood, I heard people screaming. They were flying outside," said Port-au-Prince resident Sephora Pierre Louis, adding she was still in a state of shock. "At least they know to go outside. In 2010, they didn't know what to do. People are still outside in the street."

Well, let's end 2021 with a bang shall we

The Blanco Transform Fault Zone off of Oregon's coast is famously active, and it has not disappointed in the past 24 hours, generating at least 50 earthquakes, including two at a 5.8 magnitude.

That sounds like a lot — but scientists say the fault is virtually incapable of generating a cataclysm, either by a tsunami or a powerful quake affecting the U.S. mainland.

The swarm of quakes hit around 200 miles from shore, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As people took notice, they worried that the seismic activity might portend The Big One.

"Is that the Cascadia subduction zone talking?" a Twitter user replied to a USGS post about the 5.8 quake. "Because that would be all kinds of not good," they said, referring to the fault line that runs from northern California up to British Columbia.
