[RUMOUR] Crosby may sign 10 year $90 mil contract

Recommended Posts

For everyone complaining about investing $8 million in 2 of the best goalies in the league, its deals like this that make them justifiable.

Crosby is one player, and as good as he is, he is no where near as valuable as having 2 great goalies playing at their peak (due to lack of fatigue) every single night. Ice hockey is a goalie's game, and like it or not the goalie is pretty much the same as football's quaterback - he is the most important player out there, plays 60 minutes of every single game of the season (well, 2 would) and his mistakes show up a lot more than the mistakes of another forward who plays 20 minutes a game for possibly not the entire season.

Crosby may be involved in 1.5 goals a game over the season, but 2 goalies playing every minute of the game are involved in 2 to 3 goals a game. Goalies are hence far more important than forwards, so it baffles me why star forwards can earn $9 million and a star goalie like even Lundqvist is around the $6 million mark, despite being FAR more important to his team than any forward ever would.

The cap hit is pretty much meaningless for Crosby on a financial basis, since he makes way more money with sponsorship.

The only thing that matter is Crosby's ego/reputation. If he takes 12-14 millions per years he looks like a greedy son of a B*. But at the same time, he wants to makes sure he makes close to ovechkin, slighty under to show he has a better heart/winning attitude. So 9M i think is reasonnable and it all comes down to reputation since, the money is pretty much useless for Crosby.

Tell this to the guy paying Crosby's guaranteed salary, regardless of whether the team loses all its playoff revenue when he does not play, they dont sell tickets, and dont sign any corporate sponsors?

When Sid steps on the ice he's instantly the best player on either team - hence, I'd say he'd be worth every penny of that contract (if it is indeed an accurate estimate of his next contract). Whether or not he's fully recovered from his concussion injury is irrelevant because his salary doesn't count against the Pens cap when he's not playing. One thing it will do however, is set a bar on both the Pens roster (think what Malkin will want on his next contract - right now the two stars make the exact same money) and throughout the league - think what this will create in the form of a 'ripple effect' in the league. Guys like Teows, Stamkos, Nugent-Hopkins, etc....won't get that kind of money (maybe Stamkos perhaps) but they will be asking for a percentage of what Crosby makes. If the league has a work disruption this fall it could (I emphasize could) have a negative effect throughout the league and revenues could drop leading to a drop in the cap. This is what got the league in trouble before.

They were discussing on Live @ the Score that if he signs this massive contract, there is no insurance against his concussion. If he goes down again because of that, the Pens have to suffer his cap hit. Right there such a lengthy big deal seems stupid.

Sign him two-three years @ whatever he wants. If he suffers another concussion, you're not suffering his cap hit. Then renegotiate down the road. Also, if he wanted out of Pitts for whatever reason, then he wants out. A ten year contract wont keep him there. So not only do you sign him to a contract that wouldn't keep him there no matter what, you're also potentially hooked to his contract for the remaining years. You don't need to sign these players to career long contracts. Never been a fan of them, they're stupid and we've seen it several times before already (Luongo. His contract may have looked great at first to most people but most are against it now).

I think that when the dust settles(settled), that Luongos contract still looks really palatable. Especially since most likely he will retire, and because budget constrained cap-floor teams would love to add his cap-hit while only paying minimal dollars at the end of his contract. Add to that for now, he is very reasonably paid for what he provides and his cap-hit is stellar compared to his peers.

This is quite possibly the biggest high-risk / high-reward deal in NHL history (possibly rivalled by the Lindros trade). The Pens own the best player in the game - if they lock him up, and he stays healthy, they win. If they invest so heavily and he's crocked, they lose BIG time.

If I was GM, I'd trade him. Imagine the package you could get - Perry + Ryan, Nash + Johansen + Moore, Kane + Enstrom etc. They could really get tooled up, make Malkin C1, Staal C2 with decent wingers...and lose the headache of 'what if Sid goes down again?'
