-Vintage Canuck-
He’ll become the 14th captain in franchise history: Looks as though the New York Islanders have found a replacement for ex-captain Mark Streit — and, to nobody’s surprise, that person will be John Tavares. That’s the word out of Long Island on Tuesday — Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports the Isles are set to name Tavares as the 14th captain in franchise history at some point next week. Tavares, 22, led the Isles with 47 points in 48 games last season and earned his first-ever Hart Trophy nomination for league MVP. He’s the club’s most talented player and the face of the franchise, so no real surprise the organization feels he’s ready to wear the “C.” Tavares also signed a long-term pact with the Isles in 2011, agreeing to a six-year, $33 million extension that goes through 2018. The move to such a young captain is a significant one from New York. Streit was 34 at the time of his appointment; prior to him it was 38-year-old Doug Weight and prior to Weight, it was 37-year-old Bill Guerin. Tavares had previously served as an alternate captain behind Streit — now in Philadelphia — along with fellow forward Kyle Okposo. No. 91′s promotion to the full captaincy means New York will need to find another person to wear an “A,” and candidates could include veteran defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky or the club’s longest-tenured player, forward Frans Nielsen. http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/03/report-tavares-to-be-named-isles-captain-next-week/
timberz21
I know he's the obvious choice, but pretty much the only one too. Noboby else really is captain material on that team.
Drouin
Tavares deserves it. One of the top players in the league.

Honeydew
He's still continuing to improve, man that Pittsburgh vs Islanders series was GREAT. Tavares challenging Crosby damn that was a VERY good series just watching JT catch up to Crosby playing his entire heart out carrying the Islanders on his back. This guy has captain material written all over him, this is going to be great I can see him finally hitting 80+ points this coming season to solidify his reason why he was drafted 1st overall in 2009. TheRussianRocket.
What an honour for Tavares. Have so much respect for this guy. Came in with extremely high expectations as 1st overall and despite being on a really bad team and him not having the star power name of previous firsts like Crosby, Ovechkin, etc...he's proved everyone wrong and has made the team and teammates he plays with better, and has even made them a playoff team! ...Tavares is also a top 5 player in the league despite being on a weak team (which you can now consider a middle of the pack team) and if anything, he is the perfect player to be given captaincy. Monty
No brainer as far as I'm concerned. Not only is he incredibly talented, but this is a guy that could have easily asked for $6.5M-$7M when he re-signed with the Islanders. They had/have the cap space, yet he took what was still a reasonable amount. This is a team that is only getting better and has the money to spend to only get better. Baka
I met John Tavares once. The leadership flowing off of him was so immaculate not even pepper spray, 3 taser shots, and 4 obese rent a cops could stop me from following him.
-AJ-
He's pretty much the only half-decent choice, so it makes sense.
Jägermeister
They should have gave it to DiPietro when they had the chance.

Coconuts
He was the obvious pick to be the Isles captain, but also the best one. He's a hell of a player.

Guest Dasein
LOL @ captains before him. They had to choose 30+ year olds because no young player would commit themselves to the graveyard that was NYI. Tavares has turned that ship around and is making the franchise a contender. No brainer. About time he gets that C.
zombieksa
I find it crazy that Frans Nielsen is now the current longest tenured Islander. What a crazy young team!
