[Trade] NYI Matt Moulson + Picks for BUF Thomas Vanek

Read something over at HF Boards that supposedly Moulson and Isles couldn't agree to extension over money. So theoretically, you could look at this deal as Vanek for 1st and 2nd but still a big risk if he leaves.

even if Moulson can't agree to an extension, they could have gotten way more than a player who will likely to be an UFA, request more money than Moulson, andcould bolt to a contenter at anytime

I'm not sure of behind the scenes problems, but I know that Tavares and Moulson are like best friends. I have a feeling Snow is hedging his bets that Moulson will re-sign with NYI after this year just to hang out with Tavares. They'll deal Okposo to open up room for Moulson on the top 6.

Top NHL goal scorers since 2009:

1. Lightning Steven Stamkos 192

2. Capitals Alex Ovechkin 162

3. Sharks Patrick Marleau 136

4. Ducks Corey Perry 134

5. Leafs Phil Kessel 126

....

*10. Sabres Matt Moulson 118

....

*18. Islanders Thomas Vanek 110

Yea 8 goals more with John Tavares doesn't say much

A 1st, a 2nd and whatever they can get for Moulson at the trade deadline?

Most pundits speculated that it would be unlikely that Vanek would be able to match his current average in a new deal and it's extremely unlikely that Buffalo would give him $7.5 mil + per season. Conversely, coupled with their new building, it's possible the Isles see a 5 or 6 year deal at this price doable for Vanek.

Additionally, even if the Islanders aren't able to sign him, this sends two signals out to the FA market:

1. They're willing to spend big on the right players.

2. They've officially moved out of rebuild mode and want to make all-in runs at the Cup.

I agree.

It also gives them a bit of a drop on the FA market, for one of the top targets available, while getting the bulk of the season out of him. They can also use this time to spend negotiating a new deal. Brooklyn will be a marketable location as it;s a top city in the US to live in. It additionally might have extra appeal to Vanek as it's just downstate from where he has played his whole career.

There are very few teams that might be willing to immediately drop a 5 year, $38+ mil contract on Vanek but the Isles must be one of them. That may seem like a steep price now but when average players start getting $5mil on day 1 of FA, and Moulson is one of the top wingers left available, then it might seem more palatable in a relativistic sense.

Heck, trading for him allows them to give him the extra year, as in 8, that no other team can offer him. That allone might be the clincher. This deal may seem like an overpayment initially but until we see the FA period open up, and what these two players sign for, then this deal will be hard to judge.

Most posts say NYI lost this trade, NYI made a dumb move, NYI paid way too much for the trade..................NYI beat us a few games ago........so how bad/dumb can they be

Just like how we've only beaten one playoff team?

Get your facts right buddy.

Honestly this isn't THAT bad of a deal. People are overreacting. Moulson only has those great stats because he played with Tavares. No doubt he's a talented hockey player but let's be honest here, he's AT BEST a 2nd liner. Add in the fact that Tavares has never gotten the opportunity to play with a bonafide 1st liner, this deal makes sense for NYI.

We're talking about Moulson, a player who's career high in points is 69, he's 29, and is a UFA at the end of the season, just like Vanek. a 1st is a steep price, but elite talent, rental or not always gets a 1st in return. The 2nd is in the following year as well so at least they aren't handcuffed at the draft. Moulson might not re-sign with Buffalo, he may want to go for a cup, and if NYI can make the playoffs and show Vanek that they can compete he may re-sign. Then Snow looks like a genius. The way I look at it, you're trading a rental and picks for an elite rental. And don't believe that Vanek is a lock to sign in Minny, players say things like that all the time, doesn't mean they'll go out and do it. Lucic has wanted to play for us his whole life, where is he now? Gaborik had a house here or was looking for one, how'd that pan out?
