Was John Totorella a blessing in disguise?

Before Torts came to this team, we were still in fairytale land thinking we were just a new coach or player or two away from competing with the leagues best. AV was the scapegoat as a guy who couldn't coach playoff style hockey. This was despite the fact we were coming off two first round playoff exits in which we amassed a grand total of ONE win.

Sure we were good in the regular season those years, but how much of that had to do with Calgary, Edmonton and a rebuilding Colorado being in our division at the time? A lot. So when John Torts came, he was the messiah who would take us to the promised land.

However, this past season we missed the playoffs entirely. Our players looked slow, old and sluggish. A fact reiterated by Torts himself. The biggest contribution Torts made to our organization was bringing in a retool.

Also, he cost Gillis his job (which Gillis held on to for longer than he was supposed too anyways). Now, because of Torts, we have new management with fresh views and ideas. A new coach who has experianced success at every level. And many changes on the horizon for underperforming players such as buying out David Booth.

So perhaps Torts tenure here did have some benifits. Plus we can always go back and look at him trying to invade Calgarys dressing room in the future for a good laugh or two. Anyone agree?

No just a wasted season under him.

This ^^.

You could make the claim that it helped us to get a higher pick in a year we weren't going to contend anyway. But that's small consolation for a whole year of boring, ineffective hockey from a headline grabber whose head coaching success is in the rear view mirror.

torts drove the core into the ground....he said our fourth line wasn't good enough...funny weise played a big roll for montreal on their fourth line..weise said, he didn't think that torts believed in fourth lines....

AV used 4 lines in nyr playoffs......linden and benning want 4 lines used.....

the whole team doesn't all play badly all at the same time....injuries hurt too.

I don't believe in the rhetoric from rival fans saying the Canucks were only a good team because they were in a weak division, I'm sorry I don't buy it.

Our record against the Pacific and Central divisions during our 5 season stint atop the NW was comparable to that against the NW and in some instances we had a better record against those divisions than our own. We also dominated the Eastern Conference moreso than most WC teams. I'll have to look it up, but I think our win% against the EC over those 5 seasons was in the 75-80% range.

Pros:

Enabled the removal of Gillis

Cons:

Being a control freak who could have cared less about the team and more about the fascinating foliage abundant in Point Roberts

Being a psycho who tried to kill Bob Hartley (maiming would have been fine)

Tort's didn't play Luongo in the Winter Classic which Luo says was the final straw and thus forced a change in goal. Too bad he couldn't have done that before we lost Schneider to a reduced cap though.

The man was bang on when he stated that this is a stale group and changes needed to be made. Torts has been proven right because that is what Linden and Benning have set out to do.

Both MG and Torts were victimized by the falling cap...Torts needed some better players and MG was up against the cap and forced to deal Schneider in order to be cap compliant.

Linden and Benning have an advantage with a rising cap and reduced expectations all around. They basically have a green light to do what has to be done plus they start out with a really great draft position plus they have the benefit of Mike Gillis start to replenish the prospect pool.

Mike Gillis and Torts didn't do everything right but they also didn't do everything bad so I am not going to waste time slagging their efforts. Basically Vancouver fans have their 2011 memories reset and come down to earth with their expectations...that makes Benning, Linden and Desjardins job a little easier.

It will take a couple of years to change the core makeup with Kesler being the start. With a better year, some players value will go up and that will make it even easier to do what has to be done.

It's a fresh start for everyone....sit back and enjoy the ride.
