Kassian for Hodgson now ?

For those of you that are unaware of the situation in Buff...

6ft of snow so far and another 2ft expected for the weekend. There's not a vehicle that can get through that amount of snow and forget about trying to remove it from the rooftops. 10 people have died already and there will probably be more once the emergency people can get out there.

And to make matters worse, they're expecting a complete melting as the temperature will rise well above freezing after the weekend. You all know how heavy snow gets when it wet, so you can imagine how destructive that's going to be.

Best regards to our friend Sabrefan1 and all the other inhabitants of Buffalo. Stay safe!

The lake effect storm dissipated last night. It's actually sunny here now. The only things left to worry about now is the rain, flooding, and more roofs caving in. Thanks for the good wishes.

Years ago I remember flying back to Toronto from Cincinnatti or Pittsburgh and we flew in front of a lake effect snow storm coming off Lake Erie(?). It looked like the Apocalypse was coming. The Pilot pointed it out and said it contained about 3 feet of snow.

Lake Erie is also the shallowest of the Great Lakes. That means that when the warm water temperatures mixes with cold wind and precipitation you get some pretty good storms. This storm was the worst that Buffalo has ever seen and we've had some big ones over the last 50 years.

Just like the Blizzard of '77, people will be talking about this one for many decades to come.

Looks like the Nolan coaching act is very similar to that which we bore witness to last year-wearing thin:

The real problem is that the issues plaguing the Sabres and Nolan are ones that have caused many to question Nolan's ability to coach in the NHL in the past.

He is not an X's and O's guy and typically resorts to stressing hustle and heart over implementing any systems to help improve the team's play. After Nolan's extension was announced, Justin Bourne of the Score wrote that "Nolan is one of those motivational guys who think that if you're losing, you're not competing hard enough."

Honestly, it's almost insulting to hear over and over again that the reason the team is struggling so badly is their effort level when a casual observer can see that the team is not well-coached to begin with.

Even those who don't take to the advanced stats cannot say they have seen anything that can refute what the advanced stats are saying. The Sabres have almost no transition game to speak of, and their offensive-zone play is almost hilariously bad. With two power-play goals to this point, the Sabres have essentially been giving opponents who take penalties a well-deserved two-minute breather.

The key to the future is not with Cody McCormick or Torrey Mitchell. The key is in any number of the young guys who could turn the franchise around.

Hodson when integrated into a team intelligently is an effective player and we have viewed this during his time in vancouver.

And that would be yet more of the irony.

That intelligent integration of him into the lineup in Vancouver wasn't good enough for him or his agent, who publicly whipped up a an ice-time controversy/protest fed in what looks like fairly calculated fashion to the uppity Tony Gallagher.

AV actually was using him exactly as he should have been and as much as he should have been. Sheltered him, gave him outstanding two way veteran linemates, powerplay time, and put him pretty much exclusively into situations designed for his success. His ice-time was right in line with what other Calder candidates were getting.

But that was not good enough. Some people try to blame Gillis for the situation. Wanted Kesler and Hank's ice time. A rookie, months into his NHL career.

And now the irony is that AV's deployment has been entirely vindicated.

Careful what you wish for - you might just get that ice time you very prematurely believe you deserve in Buffalo - and not be anywhere near ready for it.

WD is doing just that for Mr. Kassian now.

One can always hope he is included in a package out that brings this team a top four d man.

Why? So we can watch him dominate on another team? What a terrible idea.

Waiting a few years for that now unless you mean wielding a stick like a club and potentially risking other player's lives.

The only forwards with less points are 2 games played Sestito and the young man on a nine game trial.

When the Islanders traded Bertuzzi, that was an outstanding move for their organization.

When the Canucks traded Neely, they won that trade so badly.

Actually you are part correct, but even more wrong.

People who think that there's something wrong with playing Kassian on the third line don't understand good coaching and development. There's nothing wrong with a young forward playing 13 minutes a night. His 171 NHL games are impressive at his age - Vey is also 23 and has played 37 - and you certainly don't hear people expecting him to be a bona-fide top 6 yet - because he's only 23.

But where you're entirely wrong is implying Kassian is sheltered. Au contraire - he has consistently gotten low offensive zone starts, and has played with a shutdown center - something the clearly stumps you folks who parrot the idea that he's irresponsible defensively. He's been trusted with primarily dzone starts by three consecutive coaches now playing on a line that is tasked with shutting down opponents moreso than providing secondary scoring, which is in stark contrast to when Hodgson was a third liner in Vancouver, getting high offensive zone starts and sheltering while Kesler's (and the fourth line) handled the heavy lifting. Unlike Hodgson, whose linemates had a dual role of sheltering him while they otherwise got considerably below 50% offensive zone starts, Kassian's deployment is right in line with the shutdown forwards in the lineup. So as much as you like to make situational excuses for Hodgson (but, but he plays in Buffalol), Kassian's deployment is not actually reductive and production oriented - developing into a solid two way player. Feel free to attempt to argue with the underlying numbers, but the objective outcomes indicate exactly that.

2013/14 - 43.5% offensive zone starts, +1.41 corsi on

2014/15 - 41,7% offensive zone starts, +1.66 corsi on.

In both seasons producing higher offensive zone finishes than starts.

Sorry, but you haters - as usual - don't know what you're talking about.

  • 3 weeks later...

crazy how everyone was so pissed at the time we traded coho!! look at him now and his whopping 3 points in 28 games -11. gillis did this right atleast

At the time coco showed a ton of potential and most thought he would become a first line center, you have to kinda say we were robbed blind on the trade based on what we knew at the time. The only saving face is that coco turned into a flop but I'd hardly say that that was good trade by MG, he could have done much better and teams came out and said as much after the trade.

I absolutely agree with you. My comment was about him sucking in buffalo. Personally i feel for the kid his dad is obviously an over bearing jerk trying to live through his kid i hope cody finds a dime and gets married. Everyone calls him daddies boy but you can bet your last dollar that he doesnt like it i know i have a dad who tried running my life to the point where i had to move two provinces away just to feel like my own man haha.

I was watching this game and that goal really looked to help Cody gain some confidence. Was pretty good and showed a good side to his game for a change.

Hoping he can salvage a good season with the remainder games that is left.

Hopefully the same can happen for Kassian too.

Sitting him last game was a wakeup call. He actually got more ice time than usual because of his play.

That game wining goal that Zadorov scored was pretty sweet, but Ennis' setup for it was even sweeter.
