Time not to panic (discussion)

Well, the Canucks are where I thought they would be, right now, and I have read a lot of comments about us having to do something now, which to me means a trade.........

I don't see it that way, to me what has happened is that the vets around the league have for the most part played themselves into shape, and caught up to the rookies conditioning, as well as the coaches now have tape on these rookies, and can now make everyone aware of McCann's quick release, Virtanen's speed and hitting, and Hutton's defensive/offensive tenancy's.

These are rookies that were propping us up, and now the league has caught on, no problem, it is a development year for these players, as well as it is for Horvat, that now faces stiffer competition.

What is now being exposed on the Canucks is age, both on the high side and the low side, yes we still by in large compete for 40 minutes, but our age shows by the end of the game, playing rookies or no rookies, this is a natural phenomena and not something we should react with a knee jerk reaction.

We are still competitive with the middle of the pack teams, and as a advocate of us selling at the deadline, I am still concerned we will still be in the mix at the deadline, which will prevent us from committing to selling vets at the deadline.....that is my take

As for the PP and the PK, the league has certainly gotten faster, and it is exposing our vets for their age, as well as exposing our young guys readiness to face elite PP and PK talent, again this is a natural progression to a team in rebuild

If you really want to see this, watch the Sedin's during 3 on 3 play, they are our most gifted forwards, but their speed caused by age, is exposed during these time, and that is echo's by the inexperience of putting out 3 fast rookies for it as well.....we are in transition, that is all

I think we are better off that some of the Edmonton's, Buffalo's, Carolina's and Calgary's, in that we do not have to go rock bottom, before coming back up, but we will take a dip, and we need to support our team during this time.....I personally am not a fair weather fan, and will be here to walk beside them during this time.

In conclusion, I believe we still have a playoff chance because of the division we are in, but honestly hope Benning and Linden see it for what it is and still uses the deadline to move out a few vets to grad some extra picks. Do I want a complete tank....no, but our natural position this year without any deadline movement will be 14 OA to 22 OA, so probably about 18th OA, but still may get that playoff spot and miss the lottery.

I would like to see a winger and Hamhuis moved then, but we will see.......

Could you not just bump one of the ten other threads you have started that suggest we should concentrate on getting younger?

I guess I should be thankful? At least a lot of the rhetoric about tanking has disappeared from the threads since last year...

Give it some time, it's still early in the season.

I ain't even mad bro. Dunno who was of the mind that our vets would do any better this year than last.. Perhaps maybe Vrby and his lack of success was a bit of a surprise, but can't really be too surprised by the Sedins, edler, hammer etc.

We should all be very well aware that hockey is a young mans game. It requires size, speed, drive and teamwork to be successful. The era of finessing the puck into the goal are over. Our vets simply are no longer going to have the success they once had in today's NHL.

Out current roster, minus the rookies, look old, tired, slow and lacking drive. They show it briefly when they are down by a goal or two at the end of the third period trying to crawl back into it, but nowhere near sustaining that drive for the duration of a game.

Don't really know what people are expecting from this group. Anyone with any logic and understanding should know we are no longer a top tier squad. Gonna be a couple seasons at best before we will be truly competitive again.

Until then, we will continue to grow our youth, play a lot of lackluster games where the vets continue to regress, and this board will lose their collective minds and talk ad nauseum about how its *insert goalie name here*'s fault, how Willie is an ahl coach, and how we should just tank for higher picks.

If there any reason to think a coaching change may happen if the team continues to slide down in the standings?  I can't see the team replacing Willie unless they competely spiral out of in the standings finishing at the bottom of the league.  I think the plan is to bring Green up when the time is right.  Willie has 1 more year left on his contract after this season.  Will Willie be given the opportunity to forfill that contract or will change happen if the team falls apart?  This team has all the pieces its just not syncing.  Wish we could go back to the lineup we had to start the season.  Those lines seemed to be working well for us.

Sedin - Sedin - Sutter

Baer - Horvat - Vrbata

Burr - McCann - Dorsett

Prust - Cracknall - Jake

Could Sbisa's injury be a major factor in our teams struggles?  I know we are missing Prusty.

Here I am stirring up the coaching stuff lol. tsk tsk.  Likely not going to happen though if I were to guess.  The coach needs to set the lines and let it play itself out.  I want to see McCann and Virt on the same line. Make it happen. (Jake plays with an extra gear when hes been on the ice with McCann or otehr skilled guys.  Make it happen already!!)

Even with all of the mistakes being made, The Canucks are not being steam rolled in any game and we're keeping most teams to within 1 goal.

With a little more discipline and attention to detail the Canucks will come away with more of these close games.  IMO coach Willie needs to shake up the PP considerably.  I know you need Vrbata to pot in a couple of easy ones to build confidence, but quit squandering those valuable PP mins on him...add Edler to the PP bench crew.

Well, I'd sure as hell rather finish 30th than 17th.  But if you're around 17th, there's always a good chance of ending up 16th and then technically the sky is the limit.  I remember when the Canucks were terrible year after year after year.  It was easy to accept because they played hard but still got destroyed.  Easy to cheer for their effort and then good draft picks at the end of the year.  Of course, we've hardly ever converted a top draft pick into anything.  Linden and the Sedins, and I guess maybe Nedved and Tallon.  Probably forgetting some, but that's not much to show for 45 years of mostly failure.

Can't really see why this has anything to do with our vets. The only ones I see still generating any chances are the twins and Hansen. Right now Vrbata, Bo and Weber are not playing well right now. Not exactly screaming a  problem  with the vets. Hutton is making a lot of mistakes which is expected for a rookie dman. The defensive breakdowns are awful right now which were not there earlier in the season. We really need our injured players back soon.

Well the year will go pretty much like last year, as the teams below us in our division will not be any better, we are in a cluster of all so ran 14 OA to 22 OA....same as last year....Just remember, if Lack doesn't get hot at the end of the season, we end up around 14OA......our vets are a little older......we are a little weaker......but not by much really.........if Vrbata put some of his shots in we are 3 or 4 points better..........I am still not convinced we should be shooting for being a mediocre team......which at this point we are

Not much chance of us winning the cup this year, and not much chance of us being a bottom dweller.......just agonizingly, middle of the road........But we are playing about where we should be with who we have.........we will have to wait and see, just hope Benning and Linden don't panic

As for Willie D.............we is coaching about as well as his team has been playing.........no magic though!

I was at a game back in 1970, I think it was the California Golden Seals visiting, anyways I used my cell phone to report a guy with a smelly goat two rows in front of me. As he was being escorted out he yelled at me cursing the Canucks that they'd never win the cup.

Pretty much this.  I predicted 6-12 in the west which is pretty much 14-22 OA.  In other words, best case scenario, they make the playoffs.  Worst case, they're picking 6-8.  Most likely is somewhere in the middle.

Benning made some changes in the offseason that make the team faster and harder to play against.  There's only so much that you can do in a year and with 9 additions, you could argue that he did too much.  Granted, nobody really expected Virtanen or McCann to make the team.  The only real problem that I'm seeing is defensive depth in the top 4.

Other than that, this.....

Didn't know they had cell phones in 1970.
