Popular Post Phat Fingers
It's the day we have all been waiting for. It's the annual Free Agent Frenzy. We love it and hate it, but now let's tall about what our GM has done for this club in this the opening minutes of the Frenzy. What does Tyler Myers and Jordie Benn do for the 2019 Vancouver Canucks? To first answer that, we have to look at the players. Myers is a giant, in the mold of Chara and Pronger in size only. He doesn't have the IQ and mean streak of either Norris winner, but is Vancouver looking to add a Norris winner this year? well kinda but not. They did attempt to add Subban, but 9m was way too steep for the highly regarded but potentially declining d man. But they found Myers. Myers has been a solid NHL player for a number of years, recently completing a 82 game and 80 game season in the Peg. He was sidelined for some long term issues around his hip and his son's health. From the games played in the last 2 years, safe to say that that is not a current issue. Having a guy who can step in and eat minutes is a huge need for Vancouver. Myers is good for 20 plus minutes a night. He is mobile but does struggle at times in his own end. He has produced very well in a secondary roll with the Jets, he put up good numbers offensively in Buffalo. So he should be good for 30 to 35 pts while being a decent middle pairing defender. That's his floor. Beyond that and the real likelyhood that Myers gets partnered with Hughes could mean very good things for both this year. Added plus if he can be the RHD on the top PP unit. If he does take that increased role in Vacouver I expect him to easily surpass his past two seasons in terms of offence. So we have added a big mobile decent two way d man with some offensive upside who has never quite lived up to expectations, who sometimes leaves fans wondering what the heck was Myers thinking with that giveaway... think RHD Edler and I would say that's about right. But we are going to pay him exactly what we pay Edler and for nearly the same expected roll and.minutes. Simply put Myers is a 6'8" 230 lbs giant of a finger in the leaking dam that is the current Canucks defence. We need him and he will make this team way, way, way more competitive than last year. How? First he will be able to reduce the wear and tear on Tanev. This is critical if JB is to keep his job, if this team is to compete for the playoffs and so He can win the JT Miller trade. A relatively Healthy Tanev means bubble team. But I also believe that a Myers Hughes Pairing will also benefit Edler in a similar fashion. By having a true top 4, we can take minutes that Hutton/Guddy couldn't handle and give them to Hughes/Myers. If both Edler and Tanev can play 70 plus games, we are a playoff team. So where does Jordie Benn fit in? He gives us what we seriously lacked in Pouliot. A bottom pairing guy that can play either side, fill in for middle pairing injuries, stay healthy and not be a liability. He and Stecher are going to be a solid pairing. Combined I see this as an improvement over the Stecher Hutton pairing, but lower cost. Less offence from the left side, but Stecher won't have to worry about his d partner taking a nap half the time. Stecher can play a more uptempo rushing game that is his strength. Last year Stecher carried his partner, this year he wont have too. So we start the season with a vastly improved d core as compared to last season. Edler and Tanev get to have solid d partners, each other and both will enjoy a reduced role. They will be our shut down pair. But they can rely on others too. So what can we see happening with Tanev this year? Tanev is up for a new contract, possibly traded near the TDL and such. With the 2 FA d men, we can expect Tanev's value to rise, but IMO this is so he can be traded. Benn makes that possible. IMO an Edler Stecher pairing is nearly as good as a Edler Tanev pairing. Because Benn can play either side, is a vet and can hold his own, OJ will have the prefect d partner to enter the league with. OJ can shake the rust off in the AHL while Tanev becomes a sought after trade item. Boom, trade Tanev for a first rounder, OJ is called up, he takes the left side with Benn shifting right and we have another solid bottom pairing. Getting Myers for 6m x 5 years is a great deal for Vancouver, Benn for 2m x 2 years is even better. Good work JB.

Getting in before it happens.... now that is what you get living on the east coast a 4 hour head start. The leaks have sprung across the league. I have already had 3 cups of coffee... Reports have Myers at 6m for 5 years and Benn for 2m over 2 years. Not official, but no where do I say official. If it doesn't happen, I get the mulligan and hang my head in shame. Thems the breaks. DownUndaCanuck
Very economical defence. 6M for Edler who's up in 2 years. 6M for Myers who may slow down near the end of his career like Edler. 4M for Tanev who's due a renewal. Hughes on an ELC which is due a massive raise the same time as Benn's cheap 2M contract expires. JB has finally built a decent defence. Not sure if they'll score much, there's a lot of solid shutdown guys on that blueline but the hope is that Hughes and maybe even Juolevi can come in and rack up points. Edler - Stecher Hughes - Myers Benn - Tanev Nice top-6. Not much puck moving ability but good first passes and solid physical guys. Look at just about ever cup winner in the past - they all have one top D man and a bunch of solid shutdown cheap guys who play hard.
Nucker 67
Benning wanted to upgrade the D, and he did. Out: Pouliot, Hutton, Schenn In: Myers, Benn, Fantenberg Next, they will need to re-sign Boeser and Leivo. Not sure what their plans are for Goldobin, Motte, Perron, Boucher, Teves and Rafferty. They'll need to try and trade Eriksson, at the least. I'd be okay with them keeping Sutter until the TDL, but Loui can't be in the lineup in October. If Benning can trade Loui, hopefully it would be for a top 6 in return, for Bo's line. Canucks may have to eat some salary and add. It's been a good Free Agent day so far.

We’ll probably have to retain salary and toss in a prospect, just to get someone take some of the cap hit. But a top 6 forward? It would probably be easier to just trade prospects, then ask someone to take Loui as well. I would love to be proven wrong, of course. That would be the coup of JB’s career.
