UKNuck96
Being from the UK while I have followed ice hockey for a long time I don’t have the same level of exposure to games, shows, general talk on the radio etc as the rest of you. So there are often bits I miss, plus there were some years where I just didn’t get to see many games due to life and time differences. that being said I was pondering - we often get all excited about offensive D men who put up good points (Makar, Hughs, Rafalski etc) but are there any D men currently active that you would class as a defensive D men who also put up good points (not to the same level) but maybe they are known for being a defensive player but may have an absolute rocket of a slap shot? I’m not looking for players like say Babych who was a decent point scoring player who as he got older became more defensive, but players that are actually defensive D that accumulate points? if there aren’t that many people can think of that are active are their any players that they can think of that for this characteristic? Elias Pettersson
Erik Cernak. He can do it all. I'd give up the 9OA in a heartbeat for this guy... Edited June 11, 2021 by Elias Pettersson 2
Tom Sestito
Hedman didn't have a good year defensively while playing through injuries but you can include him here. Fox plays against the other teams best players and has stellar results. Devon Toews, Mackenzie Weegar, Charlie McAvoy are all excellent defensive players who produce offensively. IBatch
Two-way D's might be a better way to look at this, once a D starts putting up points they usually are on the PP. Vlasic is paid so much because for close to a decade he was considered the best defensive D in the league, and would regularly put up 30 points .... kind of like Babych although he was never a top defensive specialist either. Suter might qualify as well in that category of guys. Manson would be a good target for us. RHD, tough as nails, defensive D that hasn't lately put up points but did decently enough when he was a little younger (and entering his prime). RHD as well. Willie Mitchell was a great D for us and could pound the puck too. Muzzin is pretty solid too. Same with Ekblad (who I would trade QHs for one for one, same with Chychrun)...

These guys are all on the small side for D's ... PMD really more then anything. Ekblad, Muzzin, AP, Suter, Pesce, Chychrun i believe is more what the OP is looking for, guys that defend well, put up points and can pound the puck. Maybe i'm wrong. Nothing wrong with any of those guys, McAvoy at least is putting on some weight (he was tiny his rookie year, didn't look much different then QHs really). Suppose a deep dive into the leagues best D PKers would also help find out some gems. Above post i made suggested maybe two-way defenseman, identifying those guys i'm not sure exactly what we are talking about, but the terms i've seen used are PMD (QHs), Two-Way, Number One, Top Pairing, Defensive Defenseman and Rover (PMD basically). Cychrun is yet another good example why you don't give up on your guys, OJ best comp was Vlasic when we drafted him - he's a two-way D who plays a safe game, definitely noticed that with his brief sample size. Still a rookie next year too.

Still a rookie next year too. It wasn’t really fleshed out but I tried to steer clear of the words two way or all round as I wanted ideally to see who were good solid defenders first and foremost who then may have an offensive upside, not necessarily a D man who was a good all rounder although not exactly what I wasn’t thinking 2way probably is close to what I would be thinking Edited June 11, 2021 by UKNuck96
smithers joe
what we need is bieksa in his prime. i believe we got lots of scoring from our D last year. we had trouble stopping GA. we don't need high priced d-men (can't afford them), we need a steady stay at home type to make us harder to play against.

I agree with you to a point Joe, and I am not necessarily saying take a Dman with our first, but yes, Benning needs to figure this out. There are a few Dman, that are not so offensive but take their job of defending seriously, those are the ones, we need to supplement what offensive Dman we have. I like Heimosalmi as a late first, which we may be able to move up for, and or Jack Bar who will be a late 2nd, early 3rd, who may also fit the bill. I also like Braden Schneider, who is in NY Rangers chain, who is showing some promise. He was drafted 15 OA last year, and may be someone NY Rangers may move for our 9th. I guess my point is and where my frustration is, is the dialogue always seems to be around glittsy offensive forwards. And the reason is always the same, well there is no one around or near our pick that is not a reach. Maybe I just watch too much NFL drafts, where 1st picks are traded and moved, and teams do it to get a specific player to fill a hole. It must be my fault. smithers joe
anyone we draft this year, won't be playing for a couple of years. i'm talking about this next season. hopefully the find a replacement for edler or sign him cheap and carry on. this way our defense pretty much remains the same. i was hoping that you could work out our cap for this coming season. with buyouts, expansion, trades and walk aways. i couldn't come up with enough cap to go after any big contracts. if you get a chance, can you try and figure that out? thanks. smithers joe
not that i think it is a good deal, but i could see JB exploring OEL again. i don't see how we could even afford his contract. a cernak would be perfect or someone like him that we could afford. Respectfully, Joe I do not want to go near OEL, and as much as I like Cernak, Tampa won't be moving him. He is the kind of guy you want........go figure heh! We will have to trade value at some point, or get to a place where we can draft one or 2 I am just watching Vegas right now........I think they drafted Whitecloud and went out and got Peterangelo............no messing around, they just did it. They gave away a pretty good player in Schmidt to get him.......maybe you know him! Another thing, yes, if we draft someone, we will have to wait for him or them, why yes we will, and then we will have them for 8 to 10 years, when they are ready. I see that as a win........but I see drafting and trading not exclusive of each other.

Yeah, I see him circling back on OEL too................I am afraid of that longterm......and what is the cost? I am afraid, Aqualini wants win now mode..........IMO, that is premature I also go to UFA short term to fill my spots....Hamonic was a good get and a #4 Dman, IMO.....not alot of cost there

Do you really feel Montreal is the 4th best team in the playoffs JIm? Price is healthy and hot, and they have a couple of guys that are hot But I would not be counting on them next year, in their regular division I want us to be a long term contender, maybe I am a glass half full guy here But I see so many holes....we are simply just not ready, IMO
