But wouldn't saying these things lower the value and thus create the need to soften the blow in the first place?

no. you're softening the blow of him leaving, not the blow of a weak return.

a perceived contender, desperate for a playoff run, that is dealing with injuries at the trade deadline isnt going to risk losing out because they were low balling their offers based on an inconsequential comment from the previous july.

Letting the Miller’s camp know that if there is a fair offer for the player JR will move him without warning.  No final chance to make a new contract.

this is another possibility. letting jt know through the media, without the filter of his agent, that the team won't be coming up to whatever they're asking for. maybe miller starts to feel a little hot around the collar if he legitimately wants to come back as bad as he says.

What if we are the team in the playoff hunt?  Do we trade Miller then?  IMHAO if we are in the playoffs or in a playoff fight we are not trading Miller.  So it’s either Miller is traded before the season starts (or very shortly into it) or he walks July 1,2023.

Cap space is better spent on players who are actually productive

50% of 10.5M ain't pennies, even at the deadline

Involving a 3rd team has typically cost a 4th or 5th round pick.  2.9M in salary, 20% left to be paid at the TDL so roughly 600K - or 150K in salary for an intermediary team.

Would be a 2.6M cap hit (25% of 10.5M).  If the team has banked cap space would be even less.

If a team has 525K banked at the TDL they don't need any prospective cap space to fit him in at 75% retained (assuming the rest of their roster is at 82.5M onwards).

25% of 10.5M (cap hit after retention) x 20% of the season left = 525K which would be fully covered by banked cap space.

If Miller’s wife truly does like raising their girls here, then that’s a serious pressure point on him making a fair deal.  Tjere is that new house they are building in Pittsburgh though, while they are only renting here.

Brinksmanship when nearing the TDL arguably won't favour us, as GMs know that we don't want to let him walk for nothing, which is exactly what JR has also said publicly.

how many players around the league spend offseasons in the same city that they play in?

but again, a team passing up a potential stanley cup run is under far more pressure than a team potentially letting a player walk with no return, which happens constantly.

Wouldn't the NYR offer be a good example of the value a contending team would offer, though? And that's with an entire year left; this time he'll be a rental.

Damn I didn't know TJ Miller was that valuable in the hockey world. Quite the return for some silicon valley nerd!

Might have to lose the 3rd round pick, but is that your only issue what what's being proposed???

:)

I mean... I did't even know he could skate, and hes also 41 years old. But hey, if New Jersey wants him then no issues here!

It sounds like Miller will extend here but it will take a huge number, because his wife and kids are going to be in their new house (it’s their home) in Pittsburgh.  She’s pregnant too.  So do we overpay to keep him?

Several options:

Over pay to keep him

Trade him for a return that helps us now (older guys like what Calgary got for Turtle)

Trade him for futures and clear his cap

Keep him and he walks July 1, 2023.

JR said again (today) losing Miller for nothing isn’t a real option.  So it’s back to the first three.

IMHAO, we should always try to get the best piece (BPA).  Which could be a player, prospect, or pick.  But get the best.
