They need to add both a goalie and better D. Good luck trying to do both without giving sizeable assets in return.

Perhaps that has something to do with it? probably also Benning didn't find any creative options ? I know it seems I like to blame Benning a lot but it's safe to say creativity and cunningness was never his strength.
Me_
Are we blaming Benning for the Gillis-caused Luongo recapture in a Kane-to-Oilers thread? How spectacular.

I would say that was more of a Bettman caused recapture…. 1

Gillis circumvented. Bettman defended the integrity of the CBA. And rightly so. By the end of Gilis’ tenure as GM of the Canucks, no one wanted to deal with him. His arrogance preceded any potential phone call. And then to golf on trade deadline… he had one job on that day and it wasn’t sweating at golf. I wouldn't call retroactively punishing teams for moves that were perfectly acceptable under the confines of the previous CBA because the league was embarrassed "defending the integrity of the CBA". If the NHL wants teams to adhere to certain rules the should do a better job of constructing a coherent well thought out CBA instead of being vindictive because they were outwitted by a creative, competent management team. Lawrence Gilman ftw. 1 1

Playing golf on trade deadline day, sweating pints, getting asked why he isn’t working today, nervously answering that there’s no deal to be had. Class all around. Screw Gillis. No one wanted to deal with him at the end. Edited February 6, 2022 by Me_
