Popular Post -Vintage Canuck-
What Travis Dermott brings to the Canucks blue line: Heading into Patrik Allvin's first trade deadline as General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks, the message was clear and consistent for what his team hoped to accomplish. The new-look front office wanted to get younger, faster, and clear cap space. In moving Travis Hamonic for a third-round pick and acquiring Travis Dermott for another third-round pick, the Canucks were able to check off all three objectives. Add in the fact that Dermott can play both the left and right side of defence while providing a playing style that heavily emphasizes speed and mobility, it's clear why Dermott was identified as a deadline target. Allvin cited that both Vancouver's "pro scouting and analytics departments were excited about [Dermott]" in his press conference, with the two groups likely agreeing on Dermott's effectiveness at limiting shots and scoring chances against while pushing play up ice by craftily initiating breakouts. In his role on the Maple Leafs' third pair this season, Dermott posted strong defensive numbers. Among Toronto's eight most frequently used defenders at 5-on-5 this season, Dermott surrendered the fewest shot attempts against per 60 minutes. He also had the second lowest goals against and expected goals (the quality of a shot) against. When the 25-year-old defender's game is on, he is using his feet to gain an advantage over his competition. "Whether that means breaking the puck out quickly or getting up in the rush and joining when that's open," said Dermott in his introductory press conference, "moving my feet is a big part of my game. And on the contrary when I'm not having my best game, sometimes you tighten up and in turn, sometimes that means I stop moving my feet and start overthinking things." Dermott doesn't just possess the linear speed that helps him join the rush or get back to make a defensive play but he also has above average lateral mobility. His shifty edgework makes him an omnidirectional skating threat that aids him in all three zones of the ice. His fleet-footedness gives him the confidence to stay calm under pressure from a forecheck, hold on to the puck, and manipulate oncoming attackers while disguising his intentions in order to instigate a breakout. According to data tracked by the All Three Zones project, he is one of the most efficient defencemen this season at retrieving pucks in the defensive zone and turning them into controlled breakouts. In the neutral zone, Dermott's footwork enables him to play an aggressive style of rush defence. By playing tight gaps and stepping up at the red and blue lines to meet puck carriers early in the neutral zone, he closes down the time and space of oncoming attackers, forcing them to dump the puck in or risk being stripped of the puck. According to the All Three Zones project, Dermott was among the league leaders in denying controlled zone entries between 2017-2021 but has taken a step back this year, likely in an effort to mitigate some of the risk in his game. Dermott's agility also elevates his ability in the offensive zone by leveraging heel turns to make him shifty along the boards in order to protect the puck, feign intentions, and accelerate down the walls. It also allows him to traverse the blue line while keeping his body square to the net so that he has a full view of the ice in front of him and maintains his threat to shoot and pass. In Dermott, the Canucks acquired a highly capable NHL defenceman with strong underlying defensive numbers relative to his usage, a skillset that gives their blue line another mobile puck moving defender, and a player young enough that the Canucks can help grow while being able to shed some salary. https://www.nhl.com/canucks/news/what-dermott-brings-to-the-canucks-blue-line/c-332181522 2 3 4

OEL Myers. The stable experienced pairing. Dermott Poolman Burroughs if Myers is double shifted Poolman, Dermott and Burroughs are capable of playing the right side. Hughes and OEL can always be double shifted. the weakest link is in the Top 4 RHD. Myers and Schenn are the guys that if they go down, we are doomed. That simple. if these guys and Bruce can get to the playoffs. Myers will be the number one target. Honestly. Hughes should be getting some reps on the Right Side. if he could make a successful transition to the right side. it opens up a top pairing of OEL Hughes which could be deadly with our forwards. then we have some real decent options as either Schenn or Myers can play either side and weren’t they a pairing in junior at one point? so they know each other and that would be a heck of a big and veteran shut down D pair. leaving our younger and not quite ready for prime time D men to take lesser minutes, in better circumstances and also be able to match up muscle vs muscle and skill vs skill. Thoughts?

canucklehead44
I love Dermott rounding out the bottom pairing. If I were to make a bold prediction, I think we will see Marino and Klingberg in our dcorps next year with Myers getting moved. If Boeser signs his QO I could see Myers having salary retained to even out some of the dollars in the deal and provide Pittsburg with a serviceable replacement. Boeser & Myers (salary retained) for Marino and Kapanen would be a good win-win trade if we could sign Klingberg.

Garland is the guy we will move for a young RSD. Myers will move for cap relief. So out: Garland + Myers (13 mil) And in: Marino + Kapanen (8 mil) Don't know if we will sign a very old Klingberg. He's cost too much anyway.

Klingberg is on the older side (29) for sure but it seems like he would be a good fit here. Just a hunch, I think he would be a nice upgrade over Myers.
SilentSam
On the trade, Dermott expressed to be very happy to be coming to Vancouver. I then went to hunt down a few stats myself to see how, where, what, and when about this player. Right away on HDB, realized he has played only in the Toronto area, very close to family home , his entire minor, major, pro career . Its the first time Travis has officially left his Moms Kitchen ! She was probably doing his laundry to send out while he played his first game with us ! no wonder he is so happy to be here lol He finally left home

Add in the fact that only an idiot eats dead cap over the long term and that's a hard no for me. 1

But in no way should we remotely be targeting Klingberg. He's not the D we're looking for. Hopefully THAT D comes back in the Miller trade

This is nothing short of spectacular, and very telling of the misguided determination of many a fan. Why not instead be as determined to keep Miller; the most central part of our team not names Demko.

Why not instead be as determined to keep Miller; the most central part of our team not names Demko. Because I think it's likely he'd prefer to explore his UFA options, potential UFA value, and with the option to play for a contender and/or a lower tax team (and potentially in his home country). And I don't see a contract that makes sense for Miller, that also makes sense for the Canucks. Good player but ergo, he's not staying. So we need to get value for him and push forward, building without him. Edited March 26, 2022 by aGENT 1 2
