Nuxfanabroad
I utterly respect Pacc's Achilles tendon: it's accountable!
I.Am.Ironman
An August surgery is more indicative of an offseason injury that he probably sustained while training. They wouldn't wait 3 months after the season to get surgery.

Carolina lost Niederreiter and Trocheck - Pacioretty was to help replace them. 6 months takes him till mid-February - they are going to have to keep his cap space open to be able to activate him. It's a bad break for Carolina. He was fully healthy when they traded for him - from July: Edited August 10, 2022 by mll

tas
anybody suggesting cap circumvention shadyness is way off base. nobody with a torn achilles is hiding it for months before getting surgery if they ever want to walk again. for his sake, hopefully this was hockey related training and not pickup basketball or drunken shenanigans. Coconuts
Believe it or not, every injury doesn't have to be some sort of conspiracy or form of cap circumvention.. 1 1

Waiting longer for an achilles tendon repair will decrease the likelihood of successful surgery. The sooner the surgery, the better the outcomes. They aren't going to take that risk with an elite athlete to save some cap. Pacioretty also wouldn't take that risk either. They probably tried to rehab Kesler first conservatively because hip labral repair is actually a more uncommon procedure. You can wait on a labrum because it is a passive structure where as the achilles tendon is far from passive.

They'll have to activate him in season - ie they can't use up his cap space other than for a temporary replacement and likely not up to 7M - difficult to clear 7M in season. Cap accounting still applies after the TDL - roster limits are lifted but everyone still has to fit under the cap. It's only in the playoffs where there is no cap limit. So they really would have to pull a Tampa then for the miraculous playoff recovery.

The announced timeline is 6 months so mid-February with about 2 months left to the season. Tampa got lucky that it was a shortened season. Recovery time for a labral tear in the hip is 5 to 6 months and Kucherov returned after 4.5 months (like Pastrnak) - they didn't expect him back before the 2nd round. There are so many players that had the same surgery that the timeline can't be disputed. There's a real risk to worsen the situation by rushing a return and his agent wasn't pleased that he pushed to return that quickly. Tuukka Rask actually ended his career after undergoing that same surgery. Edited August 10, 2022 by mll

Angry Goose
This is maybe good news for the trade JTM club. MP was a big time acquisition to help CAR get over the hump. Theyve got some players (like AHO) in their prime before their contract expires. Id say this year and next is when they should try to push. TDL JTM at %50 retained or contracts exchanged to make cap work would be the add they need this year. MP is a huge ? now and not a guy I would be relying on at all to be a big time difference maker.
