Unpopular take:

In addition to Benning being a horrible cap manager, is he over-rated on his drafting too? Just throwing that out there.

Yes, very overrated

I'd disagree, particularly relative to the prior regimes. The draft is really an asset harvest as much as anything, he was able to draft a number of worthwhile prospects & many guys have played.

Problem is some assets (Gaudette, Virtanen, now Rathbone perhaps) died on the vine. Others they shipped off too early (Forsling, McCann). Plus all the draft picks they traded away. Madden was atleast one they cashed in on but we know how the rest turned out.

Save % is a big one with Demko 58th and Martin 41st in the League. yikes!

If these guys can average over 910 even we would probably be in a playoff position.

Even our high danger chances against is in the middle of the pack which is actually quite surprising so can't entirely blame it on that

Get 'r' done tonight Demmer!

It almost begs the question, is it really our defense, or is it our goaltending that’s been the issue?

How does a team go from 6th in the NHL in fewest 5v5 goals against, to bottom 5 next season with virtually the same d core. Keep in mind we had Halak who allowed 5 or more goals 4+ times last season.

We say it’s because of Demko and his stellar goaltending, but why hasn’t he been able to emulate that this season?

Lammikko, Motte and Highmore were used a lot in defensive situations, however, Lazar and Mikheyev both had better defensive stats than those 3 last season. That line was great defensively but we upgraded and got better overall players, yet we are worse defensively.

It’s possible our players are having down years, except, statically, they’re not. But guess who’s having a down year, and has 8 of our 9 losses?

Then you look at our third periods and you see we are deadlast in goals for and deadlast in GA. Last year, our problem was starting the game prepared, this year, it’s closing out the game, and we virtually have the same team minus a few players…

Identifying this teams problems this season hasn’t been so simple. It’s almost impossible, it’s not supposed to happen, given the age, trajectory of players having statistically good seasons, and the overall downward spiral of this teams performance when compared to last season with essentially the same roster.

Either we were lucky last season, or extremely unlucky this season, yet the stats of last season suggest it wasn’t luck at all.

This season’s team will go down as the most mind boggling, head scratching team in its history and we’re only 17 games in.

Gavin McCarthy RD 6'1" 185 lbs

Approx .75 ppg USHL Muskegon Lumberjacks

Could we still make the playoffs (perchance to Win The Stanley Cup), and draft McCarthy?

No tanking; and still get a good RD prospect in the draft?

Makes perfect sense.  Lockwood was one of our best forwards last game.  He gets his  Reward for playing the hardest and best.  That’s such a smart plan.
