Not entirely convinced it’s the smartest choice. Kuzmenko could have been sold for a very tidy return, given his current contract, and what it would mean for a contender to add that kind of piece for their run, without having to add barely anything in salary this season. But that type of move doesn’t appear to fit with the current management’s strategy/plan. And is does make good sense to build this team around Petey. Kuzmenko has proven to be a very good fit on his wing. And keeping him here may ultimately help us keep Pettersson. I suppose my only hesitation is just knowing that $5+ million AAV wingers aren’t exactly prized in the current market, and have proven fairly easy to acquire. It might have been a better longterm move to cash in on Kuzmenko’s sky high value now, get some future assets, and then look to exploit another team later, when the time comes to acquire another $5+ million AAV, UFA-age winger. But setting all that aside, I’m happy he’s staying and the deal seems fair. Kuzy is an absolute joy to watch. We need some feel good elements around this team, after the last several years of pain, and more pain likely to come.
