Don’t particularly care much one way or another about the player players as good and better hit the waiver wire all the time.

Unlike the current regime, I don’t think the team is going to get materially better by just picking up young cast offs and hoping they have more than they showed on their other teams.

The economics of the league make it more likely that you will unearth a gem by picking up a solid veteran player who has been pushed out if lineups by young guys.

This.

This is the new NHL.

Stock your top talent with young guys and lock them up into long term contracts and fill the remainder of the roster with good vets that got squeezed out.

Thats where the real bargains are. They will now sign 2 year terms at super low cap hits to stay in the game and outperform 23-26 year olds trying to play the depth roles.

Yep, it is amazing how few GMs have adjusted to this new reality.  It used to be young players were where you found your savings and you overpaid old veterans for past performance.  The pendulum has swung (too far) the other way and it is the veterans who are undervalued and good deals.

Leave some spaces on your roster and in mid-late July there are solid veteran UFAs to be had for cheap who are likely going to outplay your fringe kids and be able to mentor the high end talent at the same time about being a pro.  Nothing like the message from someone who has been to the top of the mountain and is learning the lesson on how short careers can be, and how hard you have to work to stay in the league.

Frankly a guy like Schaller when we signed him provides way more value than whatever random assortment of depth pieces we keep adding.  Schenn is another great example.  You have 3-4 of those guys in a lineup, supplementing some high end talent and you can get great cap efficiencies.

Worst case and your team is out of it, and those are exactly the guys contenders are looking for at the deadline for injury insurance.

Is there a team that's been successful for?

You need to open your mind and not just copy a winning team's recipe as the landscape is continually changing. That mentality is why most teams are always a step behind.

Have you actually not noticed the shift where RFAs are getting more money earlier in their career based on "potential" while decent vets like Schenn are signing team friendly contracts to stay in the league?

Why, oh why did we not claim Tolvanen?

Handing the reigns over to potential and surrounding them with fillers doesn't seem like a very successful way to do business in the NHL
