Yea but they seemingly got no value for taking on that contract. It makes no sense for San Jose.

It's that or keep Karlsson.  It's not like they have options to move Karlsson.

The way I look at it, Pens gave up a 1st, 2nd and DeSmith for Karlsson & 3rd rounder

SJ received a 1st round pick for Karlsson

Montreal received a 2nd round pick and DeSmith for taking Petry’s contract (25% retained)

In a way all three teams won. Pittsburgh added a Norris level dman for essentially a late 1st and a 2nd. San Jose gets a solid asset back for a player that ate up a lot of cap space and didn’t fit their compete window. Montreal gets a 2nd and a solid backup for taking on a player who played 22 minutes per night, averaged 0.5 points per game at 4.8M. If they decide to retain 50% and trade him they could fetch another 2nd rounder.

Montreal definitely runs away with a huge victory here - especially since they also got to dump cap.

San Jose definitely did not win.

They got a first round pick for a Norris winning defenseman when their starting price was three 1sts.

You’re telling me they couldn’t have gotten Pickering or Blomqvist from them?

This move just ensures San Jose’s rebuild is gonna take even longer which I’m good with.

Exactly, I'd say add Pickering or no deal.

Nah they could have squeezed the Pens for more, Dubas clearly was hellbent on getting Karlsson.

They couldn’t even get an unprotected 1st.

Pittsburgh started the day 3.2M above the cap per CapFriendly.  With this trade they add Karlsson but also clear 3M in cap space to be near compliant without having to use their 2nd buyout window.  Yohe covers Pittsburgh for the Athletic.

There’s no winners here, looks like scrambled eggs and toast to be honest.

Montreal won.

They got a 2nd for taking on Petry who they can probably flip for a 3rd.

Great move for a rebuilding team.

A staggering gain of an offensive defenceman who can't defend. Like most of Dubas' defencemen.

It’s a win if you believe that 4 players is all you need to win a cup.

Dubas didn’t learn his lesson in Toronto.

100 percent. EK fans, please name teams that win in the playoffs, cups, with one dimensional D taking up that much cap space. Dumb

Yup. Habs swallow cap and add a pick. Plus Petry will be their best D man.
