Let's discuss which Western Canadian team will be considered a cup contender the soonest

CALGARY!

Recommended Posts

So with Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg all bottom feeding for the past 5 years, and Vancouver sliding downwards from there 2011 Peak, let's take a closer look at what the future holds for these 4 teams. I don't have a lot of time to go really in depth right now but will add to this post later, as I'm leaving for my parents house shortly.

Edmonton, have been rebuilding for almost a decade now, since the Pronger debacle.

What they have:

Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, RNH, Sam Gagne, Nail Yakupov, David Perron, Justin Schultz.

And a lot of plugs.

There top prospects include,

Darnell Nurse, Mark Oliver Roy, Danil, Zharkov(spelling), would be in my opinion, there 3 best prospects in the cupboard. 2 forwards and a Dman.

What they need:

A more balanced team, they need to add some more veteran presence to guide the young ones, they need to sort out coaching and bring in a guy who can really put some structure into there run and gun game. They need a much stronger defense and a Bonafied #1 Goalie.

They could part with, IMO, Gange, Yakupov, RNH, in exchange for some of the lives they are missing. I would consider Hall and Eberle untouchables. They have a good shot at Exblad this year, if they get him, and Nurse develops into a top 4 Dman, and they can solidify a decent #1 goalie, and bring in some veteran presence. They could contend soonish, 2-3 seasons. A lot of variables and what ifs there. Hard to predict them. Every year I go on the bandwagon saying this year they will make a splash. But now I'm stepping back, eating my words, and watching to see what happens.

Calgary

No real solid veterans, Giordano is a good top pairing Dman, Cammy is likely gone by the offseason. Huddler will be solid for a few years yet.

Prospects currently playing:

Monahan, Colburne, Backlund, Russel, Ramo

Top Cupboard Prospects:

Granlund, Baertschi, Poirer, Kanzig,

What they need,

I would like to see Eckblad in a Flames uniform, but this likely won't happen. I am happy with all of the players available to the top 5. I think Calgary has an excellent sniper prospect in Poirer, and a huge stay at home Dman in Kanzig, Granlund impressed me in the few games he has played before getting hurt. Ramo looks better in net each game. I think Monahan will continue his success next season while working on his defensive game. Calgary needs to get bigger, more stay at home dmen going forward, and try to find a few veterans to work with the young guys. Oh and can't forget about future hall of famer Jankowski( just kidding, just wanted to make you laugh, stupid Feaster, face palm).

If developlemt goes well, and Calgary drafts good the next two years, I can see playoffs in 2015-2016. Cup Contendors? I will reserve my opinion until I see how development comes along next year.

Winnipeg, ( Will update later). Please feel free to throw me some opinions on what you think. I will go threw roster players, prospects, what they need when I get back tonight, but my predictions, are playoffs next year, contenders? Unknown.

Vancouver,

Rebuild is just beginning, starting with the firing of Gillis. Right now NTCs and fresh contracts for the Sedins has them a little hog tied for cap space, but I'm sure they will figure out a way to move some key assets for picks and prospects.

Top Drawer Prospects,

Horvat, really great heart, strong two way forward. Defanetly going to be an impact player. SHINKARUK, I'm still a little ticked Calgary passed on him, but I think he will be a steady 20-30 goal and 60-70 point guy in a few years.

They have a good draft spot this season, and I would hope they take the best forward available to them, as the Sedins will soon be relegated to second line duties, and the Canucks need offense badly.

I can see playoffs being a possibility next year, depending on which route the Canucks go this offseason, either sign free agents, make trades for roster players, or focus Om the future by aquiring prospects and picks. If they go the former route, they will likely be in the playoffs next year, but not contenders, if they go the latter and focus on the future, I can see playoffs in 3-4 seasons with a decent team that might depend. But there are a lot of variables, and we will see what comes to fruition in the off season.

So Discuss who you think will be in the playoff picture first, and who will be a contender first. I recommend reading up on each teams prospects from the last 3-4 drafts, as well as there current situations.

There's not a single forward beyond Perron on the Oilers that plays sound hockey. Doesn't matter how much offense you draft, if they can't throw a hit or play defense then it's wasted.

Burke has always been successful at rebuilds, it just takes him 4-5 years to do it.

Winnipeg is on the upswing, the change in coaching really seemed to help them. They also have some really good young guys in Scheifele, Trouba and Kane if he stays.

Vancouver is probably the biggest sh1t show in the west. It's unfortunate, but I'm not sure if this team is going to trade away roster pieces for picks or sell off assests and buy for the interim. We're really in that middle zone that Calgary was last year. At this point we don't even know who's coaching next year or which players we will have by the draft. However, I still think Vancouver rebuilds faster than Calgary and especially Edmonton. We do still have some young guys on the upswing waiting to make an impact in Kassian, Jensen, Tanev and Lack.

So for the sake of argument I think Winnipeg gets it together first, Vancouver second and Calgary 3rd.

Oilers. Three 1st overall picks. That's an insane level of talent on a hockey team...

Hall - Nuge - Perron

Yakupov - Gagner - Eberle

Once all developed, that is likely going to be 1A/1B situation...

Nurse - [Ekblad/Fleury]

Klefbom - Schultz

This Edmonton team is going to be a pain in the ass to play in the future soon, I can tell you that.

If Edmonton drafts Ekblad and addresses their coaching issues, they'll be in best shape. Calgary is looking good with their young, character prospects, but a trade for a veteran would sparkplug them. Vancouver, well, we're in a mess.
