ice orca
even if the cap worked out Chicago is chasing us in the standings. They aren't going to hand us Seabrook in a cap dump. They have some tough decisions to make, and the cap is a major concern. I have watched a few games and Q has refused to put Keith/ Seabrook together as a pair even when they are down, very strange to say the least. Warhippy
Who would you rather have in the playoffs, Mathias on the 3rd line or a top 4 of Hamhuis-Tanev-Seabrook-Edler? even if the cap worked out Chicago is chasing us in the standings. They aren't going to hand us Seabrook in a cap dump. ^^ Pretty much this. Besides think Chicago and the Bowmans' are going to do us a favour? Seabrook is going to cost Mathhias (if they want him) + a pick + more. Not even close to worth it for us. Dream up potential D pairing scenarios all you want, but that leaves us with a gaping hole in the 3rd line, over the cap and - any depth we worked so hard to earn. Now worth it for us at all

Now worth it for us at all I actually don't see it as a GAPING hole so much as a hole that can be filled on the 3rd line. I do see a gaping hole on defence I would do it if the price was right. As you say it probably will cost much more than Matthias. In which case I too would keep him as he has the potential to become the player were all hopping Kassian to become. Gaudette Celly
Matthias has been doing some good thing of late, but the underlying reality is that over his last 6 GP, he is still a -5. Over 17 games played he is a -10. If you do some research youll find him amongst the leagues worst which is full of Buffalo Sabers, Blue Jackets, and Avs. Buffalo is just bad and cant score a goal and dont have one + player on the roster. CBJ has been decimated by injury, including their goaltender and have two + players on their roster. The Avs are a horrible possession team with a lack luster defense adn have two + players on their roster.... Meanwhile the Canucks are near the top of the league standings, they have nine + players including 2 players at +10. So after 17 games there are 2 players that have a +/- differential of +20 over Matthias... The teams next worst player is of course his most consistent line mate Brad Richardson whom is -6. I know hes been looking better, but the numbers indicate that he's in fact weighing the team down. If this team is to remain competitive over the long term (and into the playoffs), an upgrade to either protect the d-zone or increase offense on the 3rd line is going to be needed, since Richardson is 600k cheaper, more dependable on the draw, and is an overall more versatile player, the choice of who to vote off the island is an easy one. Okay, now where's SID with the advanced stats to seal it? Cause John Scott is a good comparison to a player with size, speed and some finish..... Think he's available? Dunno if the usual offers of Gaunce and Jensen would get it done, though...
Canucks Curse
Well stated. And I hope in keeping with my thoughts that he is being played more to increase his value as part of a package deal. Angry Goose
Really think if Benning can re-sign Matthais for a 2-3 year deal with a reasonable raise the he should do it. Canucks don`t really have another power forward like Shawn ready to step in next year, and he is still young (26!) plus his chemistry with Kassian is starting to develop. But hey, wouldn't doubt Matthais wants to test the waters either so if that's the case, trade him and let Jensen step in.

oldnews
This imo has little value more than just an Ottawa media troll attempt to run some distractions into the Canucks dressing room prior to their matchup. Irrelevent background noise.
Fozzy
No way I'd get rid of Matthias right now. The guys got wheels and a big body. He's using both of those components right now. Can't see us making any moves, if we want another top 4 D it'll take a very good prospect and a pick. Can't see Benning parting with any picks this year. DownUndaCanuck
Matthias was unlucky in the first few games offensively and only now are pucks starting to go in for him. I think we should wait until at least the deadline before we consider moving him. He scored 10+ goals last season with us in a small sample size and now he's finally got himself going again. That goal he scored against Ottawa to crack open a scoreless game was a beauty and the sort of thing this team lacks. We score pretty goals all the time, but its those sorts of power moves and gritty goals with a bit of skill and finish that predominate in the playoffs. We need more guys like Matthias for a playoff run and less like Hansen. Sure Hansen plays with heart but he gets demolished by bigger teams (got absolutely destroyed about 5 times against Anaheim) and has no finish whatsoever, despite the chances and countless breakaways he generates with his speed. Matthias on the other hand was throwing Ducks off him and couldn't be contained by Ottawa's defenders. You win in the playoffs with guys like Kassian and Matthias scattered amongst the more skilled players of your lineup. Trade Matthias away and we're left with a bunch of small skilled players. Not saying you don't need skill to win, but you need to complement it with size and that's what Matthias brings. Keep him until at least the trade deadline. Trading a guy purely based on a bad +/- at this early stage in the season and his career would be a huge mistake.
Karlsson`s Flo
WTF ya he had a slow start but has been are best player and line since game 8 Trade him while his value is up I'd assume. His hot pace will not last.
Mathew Barzal
Yes please. While he's good at board play he has the on ice vision of Booth and makes for a poor puck possession player. At least Hansen and Richardson know how to run pick and rolls and use their linemates.

"pick and rolls" are fine if you are on the top line but if you are checking and playing the 3rd/4th lines, I would rather see a big body who can skate and compete with big bodies such as Perry and Getzlaf.
