Sedin Brothers
Quote So the venerable Stan Fischler decided to take a look at the Pittsburgh Penguins in his latest “One Timers” column for The Hockey News. And it went a little something like this: No matter how you shake it Sidney Crosby has become a curious subject for study in Pittsburgh. His slow scoring start was enough to raise eyebrows through the season’s first quarter although Sid seems to be back on track. What’s troublesome are reports of a feud with his former landlord and boss Mario Lemieux. That has created more negative vibes than the Penguins need. Both Crosby and Lemieux were emphatic in denying a rift between them, although without a photo showing them sharing a bottle of Cabernet in Mario’s basement/Sid’s former bedroom, we’re not sure if they can ever establish there’s no heat. The venerable Stan Fischler then decided to put on his GM fedora, and came up with this little ditty: The captain remains an untouchable, but it seems more and more likely that Evgeni Malkin will be GM Jim Rutherford’s best chip to play in the trading sweepstakes. Please note that this column was published on Monday, during a stretch in which Malkin has been practically super human for the Penguins. On the one hand, discussing a Malkin trade now would be a case study in bad timing; on the other, his value is super high! So Stan can see a trade that: A. Involves one player who is 29 and signed through 2022 for another that’s 31 and signed through next summer. B. Involves one player with a No Move Clause for another with a No Trade Clause. C. Involves the Penguins trading away their best asset for lesser centers, rather than for a collection of players that would fill the gaping holes in their lineup, beginning with their blueline. Being from Carolina, this headline has made it's rumors around the Raleigh-area. Good to see it gaining traction on Yahoo. Would Pitt take Jordan back? Great two way player. Eric is extremely underrated. Can Malkin rejuvenate a Stanley Cup winning franchise?
The Lock
Pittsburgh would be over the cap I think and 4 or 5 million is a lot of cap space that would have to go back towards Carolina if that deal were to happen. It would also be a huge risk for Pittsburgh as, if Eric doesn't resign with them (ie. how much of a paycut, etc), they've essentially given away a superstar forward (and whoever else they'd have to ship for cap space) for just Jordan Staal. I think this is just wishful thinking on Carolina's part more than anything. I just don't see it.
TheRussianRocket.
No way Pens trade Malkin, he's their MVP. Quality > Quantity
jstewboy
This would go down as one of the worst trades ever made.
The Lock
Just now, TheRussianRocket. said: Quality > Quantity Well that really depends on the situation. There are many trades made where quantity is given for quality. However, that usually happens with other factors involved. This trade, however, would not be a good one. lol
Rush17
So many things could happen between now and next season. We could really see some big names switching teams. It only makes sense for PIT to trade Malkin. I think they should of done it 2 seasons ago but its their loss. It would require an elite top line player, a highly valued prospect and probably a 1st overall. Malkin isn't just a regular player. He is extroidary and could turn a franchise around. Put him on ARZ and they instantly are a playoff team without question. (And there doing decent already)

He's not the kind of player that gets traded every day; however, I think Pittburgh would have to be careful about what they pull the trigger on. It would have to be a decision about their future and, unless if they run out of playoff contention (ie. when pigs fly), not a trade deadline deal. milk and honey
First off why would Malkin go to a team that is rebuilding (I think they are and they should rebuild) Even if they aren't rebuilding, trading Jordan and Eric basically leave malkin on himself with little support. Also Eric, and Jared probably would go for young studs and picks. Cap and value wise is off so much. Logic is awful from both teams as well NO way this ever happens
WHL rocks
Even if Rutherford is allowed by ownership to make the dumbest hockey trade in decades does anyone with a functioning brain cell think Malkin would waive his NMC to go to Carolina? Green Goblin
Carolina would have to add a few 1st rounders. And Pittsburgh would have to give Malkin a very expensive incentive package to convince him to waive his NTC.
canucklehead44
Makes no sense. How on earth does Malkin get moved, unless the Penguins spiral into oblivion?

Hard to say actually; however, unlikely.. It wouldn't be the first time a superstar's gone to a team lower in rankings though (*cough* Gretzky leaving the Oilers *cough*)

Crosby and Weber on the same team would be something fierce. The biggest question however: would the players waive their clauses?
Mr.DirtyDangles
In Carolina's dreams. Malkin is worth 3 sets of staal brothers.
cripplereh
Malkin is worth both brothers and a 1st plus young minor player!I doubt that is all that will come back to pitts!
Sedin Brothers
Eric is supremely underrated these days. Sure fire HOF player too. Has the triple crown.. no-one who has that hasn't made the Hall But he wants 9 mill from Carolina... not happening. Still, 25 goals as a Center with that help? He'd go for 70+ on a great offense
