  1. This team never ceases to disappoint me. It should be expected tho, Benning’s MO is picking old useless vets over young players. Brutal asset management as usual
  2. I wonder if he saw it and what he thought of the movie. Seeing a movie based on your killings and they’re thinking it’s some completely different person would be a huge ego boost. Crazy
  3. Is it actually official tho? It seems like this is just an independent cold case investigation team that’s claiming it because his scars match an eyewitness and they deciphered one of the notes using his name somehow? They mention forensic evidence but don’t say how. Idk none of this seems conclusive to me.
  4. Haven’t they said this before a couple years ago? Maybe it’s just my mind playing tricks but I swear they said they found out who the zodiac killer was in like 2015 (not sure the exact year) and it was someone else, not this guy.
  5. Gadjovich imo earned a spot over MacKewn and most others competing for a spot. Pretty disappointed. Hope he doesn’t get claimed
  6. I guess that’s what happens when you have an 82 games regular season plus playoffs. Cut the regular season schedule and spread out the games more so these guys can actually recover from injuries instead of popping pills so they won’t miss 10 games if they’re out for a couple weeks. Always thought there’s way too many games in a season especially for a sport like hockey where the toll on the body is extreme
  7. Wow Canucks get robbed. This is an awful trade for Canucks. Pettersson and Hughes for Hischer and Chychrun is an overpayment from Canucks as it is. We would need to get a decent piece added to make that fair. But we also give up Woo, Klimovich, MacKewn and a 2nd? Brutal
  8. If I recall correctly he’s had a number of hip surgeries. Those can derail a career pretty quick
  9. Getting sick of all these players getting huge contracts and anchoring their teams. They’re all just looking to cash in, not actually wanting to build a team for a Stanley Cup. No player is more important than building a good all around team. How many more millions do you need? What’s the difference between 6-10mill. You’re still unbelievably rich either way. If a player puts themselves and their money above their team they should be traded to a team that doesn’t care to win.

Yeah I don't think it's good for talent on the ice if you're paying one or two guys 10 mil and then everyone else 2-3 mil....  let alone for the team morale.

Really hoping that we set the internal cap in our team to Petey making 7.5 mil as the top forward, and Quinn at 6.5 mil as our top d-man.  Then re-signing Brock at 7 mil/year is not outrageous, and the rest will fall in line.

There should be a clause that if you greatly under preform the team has the right to reduce your contract 20-30%. This would make players or prevent some players not giving a damn after they sign a long term contract.

I'd rather have an islanders style cap team, Tons of really good 4-7m dollar guys, Rather then a couple 9+

  10. EDITED to include a 3rd coming back from NJ Vancouver: D Tyler Myers (3x6mill) New Jersey: D PK Subban (1x9mill), 2022 3rd round pick New Jersey gets rid of Subban and gets Myers for an additional 2 years. I think Myers is still a serviceable top 4 d-man and he played well last year for the most part, idk why people dump on him so much here. Benning was looking at Subban before. Former Norris winner. His contract is up after this season allowing more cap flexibility for resigning core players. Oliver Ekman Larsson-PK Subban Quinn Hughes-Travis Hamonic Olli Juolevi-Tucker Poolman Jack Rathbone Luke Schenn
  11. Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Dickinson-Podkolzin Motte-Sutter-Highmore MacKewn Ekman Larsson-Myers Hughes-Hamonic Juolevi-Poolman Rathbone Schenn Demko Halak I think Benning will push hard to give Juolevi a shot to stay in the lineup. Same with Highmore.
  12. Miller has been a legit top line talent since we acquired him (Please no discussion on if we overpayed for him). His contract expires same time as Horvat and he will be 30 by his next contract. But we also have other young players to sign that will be coming off ELC (Hoglander, Podkolzin etc…) Scenario 1: We keep him and sign him. Probably will get more money. I would think $6-7.5mill given his production and age. Or you never know, he could take a discount to stay with the Canucks. Fingers crossed. Scenario 2: We trade him. Without a legit proven replacement this would be a bad move. He makes the team better. However we could get a bunch for him if Hoglander and Podkolzin step up and prove to be able to fill his skates. Could easily get a 1st and a prospect or young player. Or a good hockey trade bringing in a younger RHD to play with Hughes for a long time (Brett Pesce-26?) Scenario 3: Canucks let him walk. If Jim is still GM by the time Millers contract is up this could happen given Bennings awful asset management history. Would be tough to swallow getting nothing for him given the player he is. Given all this, realistically what can we expect his next contract to be? Do we keep him, trade him or let him walk? Couldn't find if this topic has been made already so my apologies if it has.
  13. Why can we not place Ferland on LTIR right now? He basically confirmed he will never play again but he will be on IR till the start of the season? That extra 3.5mill would be great on cap savings

    2. Baer.

      Baer.

Why would he walk away from 3.5M salary per year? He doesn't have to retire just because he's injured.

    3. Johnny Torts

      Johnny Torts

He will be put on LTIR. We can spend the extra 3.5M of cap and be cap compliant by the start of the season by moving contracts to Abbotsford and LTIR. We have about 20M to work with after contracts are moved and LTIR.

    4. Bad_BOI_pete

      Bad_BOI_pete

its complicated, but if ferland is placed on LTIR now we will actually lose cap space even with the bonus cushion, so long story short we wait until at least petey and hughes are signed. just imagine he isn't there and all will be good.

  14. I think Benning has been an awful GM but there’s no denying he had a great FA day. Aside from Poolman who somehow got 4 years I really don’t see any contracts coming back to haunt the Canucks like previous years. This does not absolve JB of all of his past blunders but even the JB haters like me can’t complain too much about yesterday. Here’s hoping Canucks are competing for a playoff spot next season. Go Canucks Go!

@ken kaniff Let's not kid ourselves. The usual suspects of "JB haters" spent the majority of their time on CDC criticizing the so-called bad signings, like Poolman, which I even had some hesitations on.

The problem is that they don't acknowledge that Benning did a good job at all. In fact, they just went back to their old arguments about overpayment. That's my issue with these contrarian opinions. You at least have to be honest, and JB haters are rarely that.

I linked several people: lmm, combover, kanucks25 and so forth. They never engaged in the threads about the other Canuck signings that were obviously good. Silky mitts is another example.

    3. King Heffy

      King Heffy

There's an expansion team real close.  If these people hate our team so much, there's no airport service required.

    4. buddhahoodlum

      buddhahoodlum

There's nothing wrong with being critical, when said criticism has merit and furthers intelligent discussion on these boards. I don't like everything JB has done, although I can usually see what he was trying to accomplish. Some people here don't understand a GM likely has multiple plans, and if Plan A doesn't bear fruit you switch to Plan B, or C. Progression is rarely linear, in a team or with players. But the "haters" (gawd I hate that word) can not and will not see the forest for the trees.

  15. Bennings entire tenure as GM will come to haunt the Canucks because he’s been awful. Aside from Trump, I don’t remember a time when someone been so overwhelmingly incompetent at their job and somehow people still support him. Truly baffling.
  16. Vancouver: D Nate Schmidt New York Islanders: D Scott Mayfield, LW Ross Johnston -New York Islanders had a pretty good run last season. This immediately upgrades their defence so they can have another go next season. Gives Dobson an experienced partner to play with -Schmidt is a good defence man that did not mesh with this team it seems. We shed cap space and get 2 big players to toughen up our roster. Mayfield is a big RHD signed for cheap. I don’t see us getting a whole lot for Schmidt especially after last season Vancouver: G Braeden Holtby Seattle: SEA 2022 5th -Seattle has cap space to take on Holtby and was rumoured to be interested in him before. Could be a solid veteran option on an expiring contract -Demko stepped up and Holtby isn’t needed anymore. Gotta get rid of the contract somehow to clear cap space. Might have to add a sweetener for them to take his contract -Buyout RW Jake Virtanen -LTIR LW Michael Ferland Signings RFA C Jason Dickinson: 3 YRS @ 2.5mill AAV C Elias Pettersson: 4 YRS @ 7mill AAV D Quinn Hughes: 4 YRS @ 6.5mill AAV LW Conor Garland: 3 YRS @ 4.5mill AAV D Olli Juolevi: 2 YRS @ 950K AAV UFA D Travis Hamonic: 2 YRS @ 1.75mill AAV **D Luke Schenn: 2 YRS @ 1mill AAV G Laurent Brossoit: 1 YR @ 1.5mill AAV **Either Schenn, Bogosian or Gudbranson (Always liked Guddy) Hoglander-Pettersson-Boeser Garland-Miller-Podkolzin Pearson-Horvat-Highmore Johnston-Dickinson-Motte /MacKewn Ekman Larson-Myers Hughes-Mayfield Rathbone-Hamonic /Juolevi-Schenn Demko Brossoit We have 2.5mill in cap space to start. Once we put Ferland on LTIR we have around 6mill to work with
  17. I’d say Reinhart is much more than decent. But I guess if you perceive his value to just be decent this trade would be an overpayment. I don’t since he was pacing close to 40G if this was a full season. Gotta pay to get a player like that
  18. Vancouver: D Nate Schmidt, RW Kole Lind, RW Jake Virtanen, VAN 2021 1st (9th overall) Buffalo: RW Sam Reinhart (RFA), D Colin Miller, C Zemgus Girgensons Why Buffalo: -Schmidt was very good I Vegas but I feel that he didn’t mesh with our group. Buffalo gets him for long term so no fear of him walking for nothing like Miller next season. -Lind has good upside but we also have Highmore, Motte, Podkolzin, Gadjovich etc… -Virtanen could use a change of scenery if he makes it out of the allegations against him. Had a good year last year, I think this year was just a down year for our whole team. -And our 9th overall pick helps them with their next rebuild Why Vancouver: -We get Reinhart who is a very good top 6 player that can be here for many years. Vancouver boy. -Miller is a RHD that can pair well with Hughes. Was great in Vegas but just like everything he didn’t perform well with the dreadful Buffalo squad. If he doesn’t work out he’s a UFA next season. If he does the last few seasons can be leverage to gear a favourable contract. -Girgensons can fill that 3C position for us. Big body and good at face offs with some upside. Has a decent cheap contract. Sign RW Sam Reinhart 5 years @ 6Mill per season Miller-Pettersson-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Reinhart Pearson-Girgensons-Podkolzin Motte-Beagle-Highmore MacKewn Hughes-Miller Juolevi-Myers Rathbone-Edler(?) ??? Demko ??? (Hopefully Seattle takes Holtby)
  19. If Jersey drafts Luke Hughes, do we trade them Quinn so he doesn’t walk for nothing once he gets the chance to join his brothers?

That’s true just a lot of people talking about if 2 of the Hughes brothers end up on one team they could convince the 3rd to join them

    3. Ghostsof1915

      Ghostsof1915

Quinn's value is not going to go down. I'm pretty sure regardless of who the GM is if Quinn want's out we won't lose him for nothing.

    4. Silky mitts

      Silky mitts

This is such an irrational fear. Maybe they will eventually down the line, but they will be in their 30's when that happens imo. The bank will be opened for Hughes here and he seems to have bonded well with our young core. Also helps that Vancouver $&!#s on new jersey as a city.

  20. No one: Arrow 1983: Jim Benning is actually a good GM At this point JB defenders and haters won’t change their minds so why push it even more? I think Benning is awful too, we can’t change the past and he’s staying for the foreseeable future. Don’t need a new thread every day saying if he’s good or bad right? But at the end of the day, excuses don’t make the playoffs
  21. I met my gf of 5 years on tinder. But I think it’s kind of hard to meet people during this pandemic. Good luck
  22. That’s not a very good analogy. People love the Canucks and they have the right to be upset with poor management after 7 years of failure. You can’t just tell them to go away because you disagree with them. They have the right to voice their displeasure just as much as you have the right to show support. But I understand your point.
  23. Demko is a legit starter. I was worried at the end of last regular season because he wasn’t playing that good but he was great in the playoffs and was good this year. I’m glad he emerged as a #1 goalie
  24. I agree with everything you said. This was quite a pleasant discussion. Usually it’s one side vs the other and it gets pretty heated (I think my replies come off a little on edge so my apologies) but you have been nice to discuss with. So thanks for that
