For every question about Virtanen, there are many, many more questions about every other prospect in our cupboard.

McCann. Is he strong enough for NHL duty? What's his peak if he does gain this strength? I see a 2C. Isn't he currently hurting?

Demko. The hip surgery is concerning for a goaltender. That only increases his bust potential.

Cole Cassels. The love the kid, but what's his upside? 3C? Typically bigger guys are there, but Andrew Shaw isn't huge. When's he NHL ready? CDC seems to think now, but is that actual? Isn't he rehabbing an injury?

Shinkaruk. How long will he stew in the AHL? Don't hear much about top-6 duty for him on the Canucks, while Bärtschi gets a free spot? Is his speed and strength improving for NHL duty? Shouldn't we have drafted Theodore?

Boeser. How long is he committed to college? He seems to think he's a power forward, but is he really? And shouldn't we have addressed our defense instead?

Brisebois. Has bust written all over him. I mean the upside might be the last NHLer Brisebois, and Montreal couldn't wait to be rid of him. Shouldn't we have kept Lack instead?

Zhukenov. Currently looks like a 12yr old, so how long until he's a man, let lone NHL-ready?

Tryramkin. Is he ever going to come over from Russia? If when that happens is he anything more than a depth/AHL guy? He's a 3rd-pairing guy in Russia, is he not?

Jordan Subban hasn't gained any noticable strength at all since we drafted him. Safe to say he won't become an NHL defenseman? If he still does, just how much sheltering will he need? Or is he actually a forward?

Gaunce. Is he a winger now? Would've been better if he was a center. How's his foot-speed? His overall skill? Don't forget his 'hockey iq'.

Hutton. What's up with him? He was supposed to be the best d-man we had, but he might not even be a defenseman. More like a converted forward. Is he just another failed experiment?

Jensen. It was time for him to make the NHL last season, but instead the Canucks seem ready to give up on him. Why?

Grenier. NHL time for him now? Or more AHL? Clock is ticking.

Labate. Will he turn into anything?

Corrado. Is he an legit NHLer yet?

McNally. Why couldn't we hold onto him? Could you imagine if SJ turns him into a player? Yikes!

Why is the holy frack did we draft Schroeder? Idiots bust alarms malfunctioning?

You see, with all of these questions yet to be answered, I don't know why transforming Virtanen into Nylander or Ehlers would change much. Both those players have questions of their own. Is Nylander anything more than a playmaking power play specialist? He seems to be a ghost without the puck and only so-so with it. Certainly there's no Forsberg there. Is Ehlers going to be able to score like he did in the Q against NHL competion? Will he continue to dive a lot and become hated by NHL refs? We've seen a lot of undersized kids fail over the years, but then again Johnny Fraudreau is an all-star, so maybe the NHL will pave the way his success.

So before I debunk this poster's myths about the Canucks deepest prospect cupboard in years if not decades, I have to ask..., is this ''TOMapleLaughs'' guy for real??

OK, onto this person's myths about the prospects.

McCann..SAME size as hundreds of NHL stars, past and present. Joe Sakic anyone? And no, he is NOT currently hurting. Do your homework!

Demko...this hip surgery, that is becoming more and more frequent with goalies and also didn't seem to hurt Lack last yr, is ''increasing his bust potential''?? My good God, let the kid develop a few yrs past his draft year before using the ''bust'' word please. He had a great year last yr, a year after his equally great year that led him to be the top rated goalie in last Jr's draft.

Cassels...what is his upside??? You're kidding, right?! Did you watch that little hockey tournament called the Memorial Cup last month?? And yes, he's nursing an injury,...the same one that he ''nursed'' the entire 2nd half of his OHL season as well as his entire Mem Cup tourney. He's a highly skilled 2 way Centre, with direct NHL bloodlines, who quarterbacks the PP on the halfwall, kills penalties, and also shadows the other team's best players night in and night out. And you're asking what his upside is??? Smh.

Shinkaruk...''how long will he stew in the AHL?'' He's played ONE YEAR in the AHL!! Give the kid a break! And if you'd pay attention to what Utica was doing, you'd know that Hunter finished really strong, once he started to see what it took to be successful at the pro level, playing vs men earning pay cheques. As for top 6 potential..maybe, maybe not..has the skill and speed, just needs a year, maybe two, to develop, not 'stew' in the AHL.

Boesser. He's committed to college for as long as as it takes him and the Canucks to think that he's ready to make the jump to pro. Simple as that,...so don't let your paranoia worry you too much.

Brisebois... ''Has bust written all over him.'' What makes you think this???! Was it the fact that he was rated in the top 45 by both the CS, Bob McKenzie, and many other draft rankings??? Or maybe because of his appearance on the Cherry/Orr CHL TOP PROSPECTS game??? Or maybe because of the fact that he's a smooth skating 6'3 PMD who at the age of 17 was voted Captain of his team by his freaking teammates who were all older than him???? Yeah, he was on a very bad team, so his numbers don't look great on paper, but saying he has ''bust written all over him'' is just downright ludicrous. And saying that his upside is the fact he has the same last name as ex NHL'er Patrice is equally dumb.

Zhukenov.. ''looks like a 12 year old'' ''how long til he's a man, let alone NHL ready''? So according to you, Mid round picks who look like they're 12 never make the jump to the NHL. Ummm, Johnny Hockey's on Line 1 for you.

Tryamkin... ''Is he ever going to come over from Russia?''

He stated that was his plan...he's under contract for one more yr. Will he be anything more than depth/AHL? We'll see,..WHEN HE COMES OVER FROM RUSSIA!! And yes, he's a 3rd pairing dman, in a Pro League, and he's only 20!! And he did it as a 19 yr old last year too!! Sounds like a pretty decent prospect to me!

Subban.. ''Hasn't gained any noticeable strength since we drafted him'' . If you followed anything to do with Canuck prospects on Twitter, you would've NOTICED the exact opposite. And to say he couldn't make it as an NHL dman because of what you see in him now, at his size,,...wow any hockey fan knows that there is now a large list of undersized dmen with his skillset and package. And if P.K. thinks Jordan's the best of the 3 brothers, wow, that's getting me pretty pumped!

Guance...Yes,...he's now a Fwd..and in case you missed it, at the pro level, he's become a better player at FWD!

Hutton...on what planet were you on when he was being talked about as a FWD???! A ''failed experiment''???! He JUST signed his 1st pro deal and JUST got his feet wet with a 1 game stint in Utica!

Jensen...you're actually RIGHT on Jensen!!! The Canucks don't like him! It's cause his motivation to actually WORK to be a PRO is null and void.

Grenier... yeah, his clock is ticking, but he impressed the brass enough to get a 2 way deal and to keep improving...and so he's gonna get a good look at camp. If he doesn't pan out, (hope he does), but we shouldn't be too surprised or disappointed.

Labatte...will he turn into anything? In the NHL? Like most, probably not.

Corrado...is he a legit NHL'er? This is the year we'll see.

McNally...''Why couldn't we keep him?'' Because he's a cheater!! Which, at no fault of the Canucks, made him a free agent. So blame him!

And lastly, why did we draft Schroeder? Go enroll in Sports Law at UVic and ask Gillis.

were are people getting the low iq from? Watching him a the world Juniors he was anything but a dumb player. A dumb player that stood out to me was Frederick Gauthier. Sure Virtannen was not the best player, he does play a north south game, do you guys see giveaways or turn overs? the entire tournament he maybe turned it over twice. Give aways, I didn't notice much. Infact I think if Fredrick Gauthier was not as stupid, Virtannen probably will have 3 more assists.

anyways Virtannen will be a beast. He might not light up the score sheet, but he will make others think twice.

It was prob a 50/50 split between people on here wanting Horvat to go back

Virtanen in my opinion would be less likely to be sent back to junior over Horvat

He has an nhl body and excellent nhl speed

Horvats knock was always his speed

Horvat could go back to a memorial cup team with a top training and coaching staff

Virtanen won't benefit much from going back to a poorly coached and loose systemed hitmen team

Horvat plays center where virtanen plays wing

A lot easier position to ease into the nhl

Hence why I do believe virtanen will make the team and I will buy his jersey on his 10th game because he is going to be the most exciting prospect we've had in the modern era

So much wrong with this post... Let's face it. Virtanen isn't ready for the NHL.

Stop calling players dumb, we are talking hockey IQ here. Frederick is a smart player he is just big and slow with not much offensive instinct, he was there strictly for faceoffs and penalty killing.

The WJC was where I personally noticed most of Jakes flaws. He's a straight line player and he didn't seem to mesh with any linemates, he couldn't even put up points on McDavid's line and was quickly demoted to the third/fourth lines.

Nothing wrong with the way he plays, he makes up for a bit lower of an IQ with his skating, shot and power. We need guys with high hockey IQ but we need guys that are shoot first and hit first players as well and we now have one of those with Jake.

Same thing in utica. He was put on a top line for a game then demoted after not producing. Be it hockey iq or selfishness he needs to learn to use the players around him and make them better.

You know I have seen this comment from so many people on these boards. Is it just a fad or the cool thing to say or something? has everybody just brainwashed each other in to thinking the coach of Calgary is doing a bad job? It just irritates me that everyone here acts like a coach from behind a keyboard without any true experience in the game at that level.

Basically, the fact that jake didn't score 50 this year and wasn't playing 30 minutes a game on the first line, everybody is blaming the coach but it's not like he got them to the conference finals or anything. Oh yes and the defensive system that eveerrryyyyybody knows is just atrocious, right? Maybe the team just wasn't really that great, and maybe Jake isn't the player that everybody here wants to believe he is.. actually nahhhh it must be bad coaching.

I could be the best coach in the world but If my player continuously takes bad penalties and makes silly defensive zone turnovers i'm not gunna be trotting him out on the first line every second shift, you gotta earn it.

Calgary lost most of its top players due to age. Coaching aside that team is due for a poor year on paper anyways. Jake will probably see top line time but with poor linemates yet again. Im not sayii want him in Vancouver. Just commenting on his situation in Calgary.

Id like to see Calgary trade him to a contender like we seen with gaunce in his final year.

Need to keep a competitive balance in the CHL. The league would be lacking talent if all the top players fled to the AHL

i understand if all the players left but what about each team gets to choose a prospect of theirs to be exempted from the rule?

maximum 30/season divided into 3 leagues is 10 players. Not that much when you think about it.

Some leagues will lose more than others. This is also not counting the CHL's best of the best who will make the NHL leap straightaway.

Another way I think this could work would be to extend the NHL draft year, so then teams get to retain their younger stars for an extra year and can lose them the year after anyway. Not to mention, an extra year of juniors would allow people to scout players at a more mature age, as well as help preventing NHL teams to bring in their prospects into the NHL too early.

The Draft use to be 20 yrs. old once I believe

I think that at that age, the bottom teams picking had a better chance of getting a player to help their team out, than drafting them at 18.

18 is a very young age to become an instant millionaire, along with being able to legally drink shortly after, so many promising players careers went awry with so many new distractions growing from a boy into a man

Maybe, if the draft was raised to 19. The teams and player involved may all benefit more?

ideally he should be in utica. That stupid rule is preventing him from doing so.

This is one of those times where that rule is hurting player development. It definitely needs to be modified.

Wow for once I agree with you in this thread. The rule needs to be changed its hurting some kids futures.
