A rebuilding Vancouver Canucks squad will have plenty of youngsters to watch at the 2014 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, but 2014 first round draft pick Jared McCann will not be one of them as the Nucks prospect will be out with mono for the annual showcase of some of the best young talent in the National Hockey League in the BC city.

General manager Jim Benning confirmed to the media on Thursday that McCann flew to Kelowna to meet with the team before being sent back home by the team doctors who assessed him with the illness that will rule him out of action for the next while. Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun also reported on Twitter that prospect Cole Cassels may also be out of the Young Stars event as another Vancouver prospect who may be missing some valuable September ice time before the Vancouver training camp later this month.

@ElliottPap:

Canucks confirm that 2014 first round pick Jared McCann will not participate in young stars tournament due to mononucleosis. #Canucks

@ElliottPap:

GM Jim Benning says Jared McCann flew into Kelowna Wednesday to meet team. Then sent back home with mono after doctors saw him. #Canucks

@ElliottPap:

Benning also said that Cole Cassels, who had mono in summer, may not be cleared to play games at young stars tourney. More later. #Canucks

Both Canucks prospects will be disappointed to miss the ice time in Penticton at what is an exciting prospects showcase, but there will be plenty of time for two young players to make an impressing on Benning as well as head coach Willie Desjardins in the future. Missing the Young Stars event may be a setback, but both players shouldnt be too discouraged in missing what is at the end of the day a tune up event to the all important training camp evaluations that are done in house.

Well bummer. Sucks seeing two of our better prospects out for the tourney. Just our luck. *sigh*
