The Reason Why weve Never had a LEGIT #1 Dman

We've had a couple of chances to get #1-2 Dmen In the draft but passed. Our scouting on DMEn have been atrocious !!

Can you imagine how differently our franchise history would be had we not made some of these mistake.

Drafted Within 7 spots from where we were then picking.

Kiril Koltslov instead of Duncan Keith

Nathan Smith instead of Niklas Kronwall

Cody Hodgson instead of Erik Karlsson or even Tyler Myers.

Cory Schneider instead of Mike Green

Mason Raymond instead of Kristopher Letang

Taylor Ellington instead of PK SUBBAN

Anton Rodin instead of Tyson Barrie

Jury is still out on Shea Theodore whom we passed on for Shinkaruk

Thats embarrassing

Lets see how Detroit (supposedly the best at drafting does in comparison

Jurco instead of Saad

Sheahan instead of Toffoli

Ferraro instead of O'Reilly

McCollum instead of Voynov/Josi

Smith instead of PK Subban

Kindl instead of Letang

My point is, you can make even the best team look retarded when try to prove a point with these types of facts.

Yes our scouting has been very poor, but predicting who's going to be the one star out of a draft class out of the top 10 is pretty tough. If you think its so easy, then pick a player in this year's draft and you'll see if you are right 5 years from now.

Not really hindsight if we ever put any stock into scouting and drafting.

Especially this draft year where lots of Dmen will be once again on our wheelhouse.

Carlo

kylington

DUNN

carlsson

Zboril

Roy

Juulsen

Let's pull this post back up in a few years and see how many of these players evolve into #1 d-men.

Drafting is no exact science.

Agree. As another example, Nashville were "smart" enough to draft Weber in the 2nd round... with their third 2nd round pick.

They thought so highly of Weber that they drafted him after they chose Glazachev (who opted to stay in the KHL) and Kevin Klein, who isn't a bad player, but he also isn't Shea Weber.

On the other hand, the Canucks could have gone with Stefan and Brendl...

Christian Ehrhoff was as close it as got.

He manned our powerplay for a good 2 years, and it was the deadliest powerplay we ever had in team history with exception of the 94 version of the Canucks, which we had Jeff Brown, (deadliest offensive dman in canuck history)

With the help of Christian Ehrhoff, the Canucks for the 1st time in team history, had an art ross winner, and for the 1st time in team history we had the number 1 powerplay in the NHL.

the people that say "oh we don't need him" really baffles me.

Also dont forget about Jyrki Lumme, he was smooth, could skate and make a great first pass. Had decent numbers as well. We stole Jeff Brown, he was really the difference maker in that 1994 defence, as exemplified by that great pass to Bure for the winner vs Calgary.

Draft is a crapshoot for the most part... The real reason was ego.

Maybe he was not a true elite defenseman in both ends of the rink but Erhoff was 55 point defenseman for two solid years driving one of the scariest power plays in the league and helping get the Canucks reach the upper echelon of the NHL and one game from the cup.

And we let him walk... He wanted 4.5mil plus a signing bonus.

We let him walk and re-signed Salo for 3.5mil.

Pretty much the end for us....

And ironically for Erhoff.

Sad...

Sucks that we haven't had that dominating number 1 norris type dman. Bourdon was the closest we came imo.

Bourdon never made the NHL so who knows how he would've panned out. To say he was a Norris type defender is quite ridiculous

For Canucks prospects he was the closest thing to becoming a number 1 type dman. Not saying he would of but he was the closest in terms of potential. So chill

I think Bourdon MIGHT have been a #2 guy. Probably #3 or #4 though.

In his brief pro career, his offense didn't really materialize, his defense was spotty at best, and he looked like a bit of a project. Like most Q defensemen. At no point could you say 'WOW! There's the #1 defenseman we've been looking for!'

Considering Kopitar had stud #1c potential, the pick was a complete mystery at the time.

Bourdon was like a poor man's Letang. It's interesting that Letang fell to round 3 in that draft, when he pretty much looked better than Bourdon who went 10th overall. In his draft year Bourdon couldn't seem to stay out of the box and he collected a big amount of minuses, while Letang, who was on the same team, played a bit more of a steady game and outclassed Bourdon in the U18 tournament.

We'll never know how good Bourdon could have been, but I don't think the pick was good at all.

RIP.

I hope we draft Carlo. He has that size, stride, physicality and pure shutdown capability that this team lacks in a single blue liner. He could add stability to our back end and deal with big forwards not to mention he has great hands and can create scoring opportunities with his highly coveted passing ability. He may lack a bit offensively but can open space for Subban to work some magic while being his defensive insurance policy. He also has sandpaper and leadership value. Sounds like a franchise shutdown dman to me. This team has a terrible draft record quite honestly apart from some obvious standouts so it's no wonder we've missed out on a Stevens, Pronger or Keith.

If he is a franchise shutdown D why would he be paired with Subban?

The likelihood that Subban turns into his brother is quite low. I just hope Subban can make it to #6

No, not his brother is what I hope, but only for Jordan Subban to be the offensive stud Jordan Subban. I realise his defensive play is a liability, but letting him run a loose upon the opposition as another foreword with some big skilled bodies creating space for him seems to be an admirable facet for a team with a popgun offence. Carlo would simply be a stabilising force defensively, a Ray Lewis on skates!!! Or maybe the next Chara. The latter of which is more inciting.

Not really...he had lots of potential but he was still 3-4 years off reaching that...if it even woulda happened.

Its to bad what happened for sure though.
